any one done 3/4 short bed
I just picked up a leaf short bed frame and toying with the idea.
any one ever done this? I would love to tow my car trailer with this. has any one towed with 3/4 short bed Is this a bad idea I should get out of my head? |
Re: any one done 3/4 short bed
Putting aside the whole short vs long for towing lets look at the frame. You didn't say if it was a 4x2 or a 4x4 so I'll include both. The frame section modulus based on a 39k psi carbon steel frame rises quite a bit from the lightest C10 to the C30s. Most of the increase is due to section height changes of the frame.
C10 115 2.98 section modulus C10 127 2.98 K10 115 2.70 K10 127 3.48 C20 127 3.71 K20 127 3.48 C20/30 133 Longhorns 5.05 C30 157 7.29 Now when you think about towing loads everything is hanging off the rear trying to bend and twist the frame. A heavy tongue load even with an equalizer (rarely seen on car trailers BTW) is a lot to ask of any frame. If you noted the Ks as having lower numbers than the Cs generally it is due to the same section height being used but over a greater effective length due to the leaf springs at both ends. And as such they are not rated as high or for slide in campers by Chevrolet. In summary I would use as heavy a frame available for towing a heavy load like a car or truck on a trailer. The only workable alternatives would be to cut a C20/30 frame (you probably have one laying around) or go to a goose-neck/fifth wheel setup. By removing the overhang load the frame becomes effectively stiffer and better able to deal with the loads. |

Thanks tim thats what I was thinking. I always knew it took more sawzall blades to cut up those c30 frames. Thanks Jeremiah

Re: any one done 3/4 short bed
I cut my 69 3/4 ton down to a shortbed and drove it that way for a short time. With the 3/4ton leaf springs and rode absolutly horrible (old shocks didn't help either)
I converted it to a lowered half ton and it rides much better. |
