Bought my first GMC V6 today

I have owed a lot of Chevy/ GMC trucks to drive and to part out but I have never owned a GMC V6. I own I6's, SBC's, BBC and a 348. Some of you might remember when I bought the 61 Chevy C70 for the 348. Well now I bought a very rough truck tonight that has a V6. I think it it is a 60 or 61 GMC 4000. I am still waiting on the title and I do not know how to tell. All I really want is the V6 so the truck condition was not real important. Thought you guys might want to see it. It will be a few weeks before I drag it home but it is paid for.

Awesome! Be sure to keep those emblems if you scrap the rest of the truck. And hang on to any V-6 specific brackets if you don't use them. Looks like the turn signal lenses might be salvageable too. Good to hear you want the V6!:metal:

Good for you. Hard to tell from photos but it looks like the glass might be good too. Interesting I don't remember mine having two breathers on the same valve cover. Wonder if that's a later smog addition or something. It also appears to have power steering. The pump and brackets could be desirable if it could be fitted to a modern box. When it comes down to identification, I believe the 1960's had a one barrel carb/intake manifold. I'm sure the GMC guys know when they went to the 2 barrel manifold.

There are several parts to remove before it will be scrapped but the body is VERY rusty. My Dad and I have an engine collection in our barn and I have wanted a V6 to add to it. In addition to the Chevy engines, we also have a Ford Flathead and a Buick Nailhead. I am always looking for something ussual to add to the collection.

I imagine that the mirror arms/heads, rims and grill will have value to someone also. Nice find though.

Congrats on scoring a V6!!

Are you looking to sell some of the parts on it, once you get it in your possession?

If so, I would like to get pricing on a Choke cable (if it has the gray knob), the fender emblems (if they are not chrome), and the parking light lenses / housings.

If you are going to hold off on parting it out, that's cool too! Just figured it wouldn't hurt to ask!

if you are looking for a 351-E out of a 66 GMC compleat i let one go to a scrap yard in flint michigan with about 80,000 miles on it & needed valve seals . this is why i let it go. i beleave he still has in his stock. its at a yard called cut rate . ask for dale & tell him chaz the plumber told you about it. good luck.

A little far for me to pick up an engine but sounds like it would be a good deal for someone to grab. Thanks

For those who are not familiar with the history of the GMC V6, it was designed in an era when GM did not have any V type gas truck engines. Larger Chevy V8 trucks up to '59 had converted car engines from Buick. GMC previously only had big 6 cylinder gas engines.GMC decided to build a gas V6 with the characteristics and durability of a diesel. 305 was the smallest version, larger trucks used 401's and 478's. V6's were never designed to be hot rod engines, they were designed to be truck engines, high torque at low rpm's that racked up high mileages before rebuilds.If you used your truck as a truck back in the day, you loved this engine. If you are buying one today, there are a different set of challenges. The problem with these engines is it's 2012, not 1962, GMC dealerships are useless in helping you find parts, auto parts stores are hit or miss and most repair shops have never heard of them.

Intersting picture, great story. I drove a '62 GMC 6500 with a 478 V-6 for 3 years. It was 9 years old when I started driving it and the mechanic, who I became friends with, told me that there was never much trouble with the truck from the day it was bought new. The truck ran great and other than 2 Water Pumps (the original and soon after a replacement) the truck never needed anything more than a Tune-Up. We would haul some loads with that truck too. It would carry about 20,000 lbs (GVW was 32,000).

Pulled mine out of a field where it had been sitting for six years. After a new cap and set of points it cracked off. Shut it down changed the oil and been driving it ever since. Never smoked for a second and it is a major conversaion piece any where i go. Guy before me mounted a four barrel holley he had sitting around to it and only runs the primary's. It works just fine so I haven't changed it yet.
Had hell finding a water pump for it. Keep all you parts many of them will have to be rebuilt not bought.

My buddy's 66 was out in a field and i think he gave like 400$ or 600$ for and he went out swapped the rims checked everything put new battery on cranked it up and the guy afterwards started back tracking wanting more money;), deals a deal got in it and drove it home:metal:

Are these motors just lost to the past or are aftermarket parts available for them? I read somewhere that they were made in some insanely large sizes. I would skip the LS transplant if I could find one of those monsters and build it up.

You can find several rebuild parts at local NAPA stores, etc.

There aren't really any aftermarket *performance* parts for them due to their design of being high torque low rpm machines. There is some talk at the 6066 guy mailing list of custom milling parts to improve the HP though.
They're not racers by any means, but they weren't meant to be.

The real beauty of them is that at idle you can tow a house, two barns, and a trailer with Godzilla in it up the side of the grand canyon without breaking a sweat :sumo:

They do make aftermarket HEI distributor for them that is for sale online. Other than that the stock parts are a little expensive. They are industrial 4 ring motors and not meant to be high revers. Mine redlines some where around 3500 RPM. They are a conversation piece, can't count the number of times some one has asked me "whats under the hood" and told them "the original V6" and got the "Son I think you mean stright 6". With true dual 2 1/2 exhaust and 40 series flows it sounds like a healthy V8 at idle. They were way ahead of there time and over built, stout crank, hefty fly wheel, big rods, lots of rotating mass hense the low rpms. Built a little sbc for mine to swap in so I can take my time and rebuild my 305E but still get my cruising fix on the weekend. Want to attempt a set of long tube headers for mine, and maybe machine the intake to accept a small four barrel like edelbrocks 500cfm. One of those 702 V12s would make an awsome rat rod motor.:gmc2:

To answer your question. The body is VERY RUSTY and I do not think any of the sheet metal is worth saving other than for possible patch panels. Thanks
