CUT IT UP!!.. Sorry purists... Alright.... I will admit it was a bent and rusty one destined for the scrap heap so we decided to cut the cowl part off and see how it layed out on a 68 truck hood.. WOW.. I could not believe how it fit...

Since I do not really care for the cowl riser section on the aftermarket 67/68 cowl hoods I decided to start cutting away.

Well after about an hour of measuring, staring and pondering I tack welded the cowl riser to the truck hood, drew a guide line down the sides and the front, then started cutting away with a die grinder! Both pieces at once.

I did have to make a small slice on the rib at the very front and pull it down a tad and had to shorten up the overall length about 2 inches. I used some panel clamps to keep it all aligned and tacked it all the way around. Violia!! A home made cowl hood.
I was amazed how easy it all came together.

Great use of vintage parts.
I agree,... the aftermarket cowl hoods should look this good.

What are the little triangle pieces? To weld it on I guess? Magnets?

Looks good man, but I would be sick to my stomach cutting up that hood. I'm an old Camaro nut. But I guess if it was pretty well done, then save as much of it as you can, absolutely.

Nice job..

The triangle pieces are magnets. They are a welders best friends.

We did save the inner structure off the Camaro hood just in case we can make it functional.

my dad had a real 69 dz z28. he had to sell it because it ended up being worth more than my house.lol but that makes me slightly sick to see you cut one up. but i understand why, they have the prefect hood.

Sorry no updated pics yet.. been busy with other projects. about all I have done is finish welding up the front portion. I still need to shorten up the rear section and attach it, then figure out how the inner cowl induction section will mate up to the Big block air cleaner.

That hood has a great profile, looks like it is supposed to be there...

Is the overhang at the back of the hood going to be moved forward? I am pretty sure it will hit the cowl if you don't...

WHAT??? I can't believe you took an original hood and did that!!! Must admit, though, that Camaro cowl induction does look good on it

I do believe it will have to be moved forward, I need to install the wipers and do a bunch more test fitting to hopefully make that part work.

Yup sure did!! LOL. had a choice of cutting up a brand new repop or this one. it was very rusty at the front and destined for the scrap pile, it apparently sat nose down in the mud after a flood.

LOL, Tim I totally misread your orgininal post. I thought you were refering to the Z28 hood, I didn't think twice about cutting it up.. but the truck hood? yup. hesitated about 10 seconds.

Got a few minutes after lunch today and figured out where the back of the hood had to be to clear the windshield, shortened it up and tacked it on.
I am not sure how I like the 2 inch space at the back of the truck hood. I may fill it in.
What do you guys think?
