question about upgrading to disc brakes

Hello all,

I am rebuilding a 68 c10 shortbed and I have a few questions. I trying to upgrade the front brakes to discs. I have heard that you can use parts form a 73-88. I am on a budget and looking to do it as cheap as possbile. I heard from a friend that you can go to a local parts shop and use the rotors and disc from a 73-88. I know I need to get the new spindals to make it work. Will a set of spindals off a 73-88 model work? Will the brake booster that come in those work as well? any info will help Thanks

You need the ball joints as well to make it work. I think you should just go to your local junkyard and get the whole cross member from a newer truck. Grab the brake setup while your there.

thanks guys. I have a junk yard here that I can go to. They have a deal on saturdays. Anything you can carry across a 50ft scale for fifty bucks. I think I am gonna head out there to see what I can find. Will the brake boosteralso work or will I have to order one.

Re: question about upgrading to disc brakes

What exactly are you going to use from the junkyard?
Most of these old trucks that are left, are wore out?
Standard spindles and dust shields,... maybe.
Are you going to run drop spindles?
That leaves you with dust shields.

All ball joints, tie rod ends, brake rotors, brake hoses and calipers should be bought new.
Master cylinder should be new.
Maybe the prop valve for disc brakes can be reused.

If your current front end is nice and tight,... just buy a set of 63-70 conversion spindles for $219 and get the rest from your local parts store.

No need to change the crossmember, a-arms or steering linkage.

I was only going to use the spindals and the dust shield. I shopping around to find the rest. I going to get some other stuff from the yard so I was just going to grab those while I was out their since its only 50 bucks. I am tryingh to find a booster/ master cyndiner thats not to much $$$. But everything looks to be pretty expensive. Will one from a 87 model work. I found the entire set up at autozone for about 220. I know its not the best of parts but I am on a budget.

Re: question about upgrading to disc brakes

87 parts will work fine.
Make sure you grab all the steering linkage because the 87 tie rods are bigger than your '68 parts.
