Grinding a 10 bolt?
 

It is structurally ok to grind down the knubs on a 10 bolt? I asked it here because, yes I searched, and shaving/grinding a pumpkin is more hardcore than lift blocks and a trailer hitch.

I tried asking on Pirate4x4, but as usual they get mad at young guys asking legitimate questions.

I doubt that it would hurt anything but I don't see that much benefit for the work involved... If you drag that area over a rock then it will slowly grind it down anyway. You could smooth the front side of them so they slide over things better... Or they make steel skid plates..

Pirate 4x4 is full of a lot of DB's that are quick to react to a new guy or what they perceive as a "dumb question". There is a lot of knowledge there but it helps to search and read in the shadows. They probably told you to swap it out for a 14 bolt and quite playing with that 10 bolt, right?

I have never been on that site just because I have heard so much bad about it and those guys tearing up everyone that does not know as much as they do, like they knew everything about 4wds when they were born...lol

I "shaved" my 14 bolt but that is a huge housing , Not sure that 10 bolt would be worth the extra work .

I know this thread is old but cut them off won't hurt a thing. And screw those pricks from pirate. It's obvious that if you were interested in getting rid of the 10 bolt you wouldn't be asking the question. Everybody wants to chime in of what to do. "get a 14" yak yak. The guy just wants to enjoy some off road with what he has. Maybe he don't feel like he has to keep up with the joneses.

It isn't about 'keeping up'. A 10 bolt rear just doesn't survive very long offroad...and 14bolt FFs are cheap/plentiful.

Yes your right. But I'm getting at his question. It wasn't "will a 10 bolt work for wheelin". I'm just saying they guy asked a simple question and immediately he should do this or that. Maybe he don't have the cash. Yes they are cheap but he would need different wheels tires then a front etc. maybe he only goes once a year. This site sometimes is like pirates. Why stop at a 14. Why not go to 2.5s or f106. I'm just saying he said he was young if wants to spend hours grinding let him and let him enjoy what he has.

I don't think it will affect the strength of the housing but then again i didn't design it.... as far as rockwells those are for big water puddles =-p

I think what we've learned here is,yes,you can probably grind the nubs on a 10-bolt but that won't turn it into a 14-bolt.

Wheel it till it breaks. Yeah he needs a 14 bolt with those big ol 33s lol. I have always said. If it ain't broke don't fix it.
