engine mount question
I was talking with a fellow today that claims you can swap 67-68 sbc mounts side to side and be able to bolt a bbc in useing all the sb mounts
has anybody done this is it really that easy? If this does work does it clear all the colum shift linkage? Ive heard the bbc chevelle headers fit what about bbc 69 camaro bbc headers? |
Re: engine mount question
I've heard of people using sbc mounts on a BB, just not heard of it that way. I know chevy had an issue with BB mount problems until 71 and their fix was a cable or chain from the motor to the frame. they changed to the clam shell mounts in 72 and a different style in 73 that I think was universal for small or big.
I look at it like this. Torque, they may hold up for a while but thats not what it was designed for. I know its been done. just not how I would do it. I'm sure someone will chime in who knows more about them. |
Re: engine mount question
If you have a stockish motor and just putt around then the stock mounts are just fine. If your worried about torque and get on it all the time then get a set of after market stands and mounts. As for headers, not real sure any will "bolt" in with no "adjusting" or "massaging". Even the $1500 custom ones require some massaging. I like the hedman elites, nice thick flanges, ball sockets, and inexpensive enough you don't mind ball preening them as needed.

Re: engine mount question
Yes I do like the elite's they work/fit good on my sb camaro oh yhea an thats the only one I beat on it takes a lickin an keeps on tickin
Ive been pondering offin the pontiac an keepin the bb. It's got the almost new 69 headers on it thats why i asked( I do still have the bbc manifolds if the headers dont work) just been thinkin that i'd pull the tired 283 an drop the bb in till i got the sb properly rebuilt my bb isnt a monster it just a low mi. 0.30 over peanut headed 454 that runs smooth and it should pull my lil'stepper around pretty good with the 3ott If i can just swap the mounts around that will save me some dough |
Re: engine mount question
On my first blue 72 truck I used the motor mounts that came with it. It had a 350 from the factory and I put a 502 in it. It never seemed to give me any problems. As for the headers on my current truck I bought a set of hedman shortie headers for a chevelle. I just had to notch the motor mounts out a little on the rear of them to clear. Thats for a small block though, I don't know about a big block.

Hey guys thanks for the help in saving a bro on some dough
so it seems you can use the sb mounts but not recomended with a wild motor. I Know of a older fellow who claims he installed lots of those motor mount cables/straps on cars/trucks back in the day when he worked for a dealership. this is the bb Im gonna chuck in my stepper for a while |
Re: engine mount question
The loops and cables were a response to a recall. I think the '73 mounts were different to address the issue.
