I learned a lesson today

I have a 64 short step that I have wanted to swap out the hood on it for a 61 hood.

I looked around and made some calls and sent some emails and thought I had found 2 61 hoods to buy. Both of them were supposed to be "really nice with no dents"

So I posted my 64 hood on craigslist at a great price and sold it to the 1st guy that wanted it....great for me....NOT!

Then I went to look at the 61 hood (s) turns out it was 2 guys selling the same hood and that hood has a big split down the edge of it, far from being a really nice hood.

The lesson is: Don't sell what you have until you buy what you want and are satisfied with the quality of the product.

Now im hoodless :waah:

man, thats a bad deal!!!

when you do get a 60-61 hood make sure you get the "pin" from that same year truck, they are about 2 inches longer than the 62-66 pin, you will be able to use the 64 pin , but you have to adjust it all the way to the top, and will have a real difficult time latching/opening the hood.

I'm sorry to hear that! Good luck finding another hood.

Re: I learned a lesson today

The last hood I looked at had one shallow easily repairable dent on top. A more correct description would have been the entire center of the top surface was caved in. The dent could have easily held a gallon of water without spilling a drop.

I’m not sure which is harder to find, a decent hood or a good door. I sure hope you can find something that’s as least as nice as the one you just sold. I looked for a good condition 60-61 Chevy hood for over 10 years and eventually changed my mind and gave up. The only ones I found worth buying were on school buses, but the owners either used the bus or lived in it and wouldn’t sell.

10 years? Holy smokes man you have way more patience than I do. Never know that the BIG truck hoods would fit the C10's a whole new investigation area just opened up.

Sounds like the guy that tried to sell you a hood is related to the one that tried to sell me.

I knew the pin was different and I believe the latch is also a different one.

Oh well, live and learn they say.

The latch is different only in the shape of the release mechanism. On the 60-61 hood the release handle points down and is accessed in the gap between bottom of the hood and the grille support. The 62-66 hood release is in the rectangular opening on the hood itself. Here's a picture of each type:

The lower striker plate is the same, although the pin length is apparently different in some applications. I'm still running the original 1960 lower plate that came with my truck and don't remember adjusting the pin length at all. Doesn't mean I didn't, I just don't remember it needing adjustment.

The nice feature of many big truck hoods is that because they are so much farther from the pavement they are frequently undamaged and rust free, having avoided road salt. Not always, but enough to make it worth looking at them first if you find any candidates.

Don’t know how far you are willing to go, but there are a couple in Nor Cal.

One seems reasonable, the other may be from your original friends....

Re: I learned a lesson today

@ Newbie saw both of those hoods and with the rust in them I'll pass. Thanks for posting them.

Talked to Rich and right now he doesn't have anything in stock.

I did stop out at DVAP in Deer Valley and looked around. They do have 1 hood that would work but it is missing the signal lights and the trim.

They want $450 as is and another $50 to take it off the truck ( not bad for 5 minutes work) plus finding the other parts.

Guess if I wanted to spend 600-700 it would work, but I don't.

Theres nothing wrong with your girl going aroung topless! I know the pins are different because I had one chromed and could not get my hood to latch. looked around the garage and found a different pin and that one latched.

Re: I learned a lesson today

Went from a 60 hood to a 62 hood, I had both and personally like the later hood better.
I had to change latches because I could not access the release to the 60 latch through the 62 hood. Don't remember exactly why.... Too many beers, I mean "years" ago.
Both hoods latched on the 60 latch, and I did not change or adjust pins.
Not trying to start any arguments, just stating my personal experience.
