why 73-87?

Why do you guys prefer the 73-87 trucks over 67-72 trucks? Is there any specific reason or is it just because.....?

I have a 82 but am thinking about getting a older one any thoughts either way?

TIMSPEED 05-21-2003 02:25 PM

I personally like the look of the 73-79. But I REALLY like the look of a 72 SWB Fleetside too. :D

bpmcgee 05-21-2003 02:28 PM

Certainly the 73-87 trucks are more car-like. And it's easier to find car-like features such as cruise control, power windows, etc. And, if you're a fan of GM electronics (which I'm not), 73-87 are the only years to get GM Fuel Injection.

For me the biggest drawback to them (except for the fact that they steer like aircraft carriers) is that there are so many newer ones still on the road, that my '75 I just restored is nothing more than "an old truck." Maybe in another 10 years they'll reach collectors status.

i was more or less forced to get it when i turned 16. really wanted a old jeep. it has been a good truck. and as of right now a Jeep is the only thing i would give it up for.

CHEVY_FOREVER 05-21-2003 02:46 PM

Don't get me wrong I do really like my truck, but there is something about those older ones.... wish I could have BOTH!

I have the same feelings as you. I would love to have a '67-'72 and have been keeping my eyes open. However, they are much more expensive and rare than than our trucks. If somebody was to want to trade their 67-72 for mine, I'd probably do it in a second. :)

1974StepSide 05-21-2003 03:04 PM

If I could I would have both my '74 and a '69-'72 style truck.

I would say for me personally I prefer the 73-87 style because of nostalgic reasons. When I was growing up my grandfather had a '75 Stepside, and I loved that truck.

Even when I was like 8 years old I hoped he would have passed his truck on to me... Unfortunately he gave the truck to my aunt, who in turn blew the engine and sold the truck afterwards.

I wish I could find his original truck somehow and restore it, now that would be a great story.

I like the look and you rarely...until recently see many in good shape. :)

bagged81 05-21-2003 03:33 PM

I was kinda forced into mine too. When I was 17, I was looking for either a '56 F100 or 72 SWB Cheyenne, but my dad found this and bought it (with my money) without my consent. I was not my favorite, but it has done me well since '97. :D

I have been thinking about getting a 50-53 :bowtie: right now.

Captkaos 05-21-2003 03:47 PM

I like the body lines on them. More specifically on the 73-80's closely followed by the 81-87's.

old Rusty C10 05-21-2003 03:52 PM

its not that i prefer 73-87s to 67-72 cause i love all old trucks. Its just that i happen to own a couple of the 73-87s now as soon as i can ill be buying an older one tho anything to piss off the neighbors

swervin ervin 05-21-2003 04:00 PM

Personally, I like the look of 73-87's better than 67-72's. I prefer the look of the 81-87's better myself, but any 73-87 bodystyle suits me.

Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't turn down a nice 67-72, but they are hard to find in decent shape.

MSL 05-21-2003 04:13 PM

Me too i like the look more than the 67-72. my dad owned a 72 that i helped him put a 400sbc in i liked it but not as much as his 73 4x4 i just like the shape. if i was to get a older truck than the one i have now it would be 63 we had one at one time years ago.

Actually the '87 is the only year to receive Electronic fuel injection of this era.

If you understand it, It's a great system IMO it's better than any quadraboog carb out there or any carb for that matter.

And i like the 67-72 years as well and would love to own one sometime and it would have some form of feul injection on it too. But as allready stated there hard to find in good condition unless you got 40 grand to lay down.

Davy 05-21-2003 04:53 PM

I think both generations are great....Specifically Blazers. I love the convertible aspect. The 67-72's look cool as heck and are quite a conversation piece. But let's face it, the 73-75's ride better, are quieter inside, and are more comfortable.

I plan on having one of each...the 1st gen. for show and the 2nd gen. for daily driver.

imho

Because mine was free!!!!! It's nice and wide. Try to get the same amount of room out a new model. I don't think so.

Tom 05-21-2003 05:04 PM

Used to be that 73-87's were the only stepsides I liked. Then I read a article about a 400hp 383, and in my extremely retarded state [I didnt even know what a torque wrench was yet] thought ALL 383's had 400hp. So when I was looking for a truck I found a 78 stepside with a 383. It was all over after that :D
Now I cant stand anything else except 98-02 accord v6's. ;)

I had a 72 3/4 ton long bed and I hated it. We sold it back to the guy because it wouldn't work. I like the looks of the 73-87 better than the 67-72. When it comes to driveability I like either one as long as its a shortbed. I can't stand to drive longbeds. What made me take the 84 was mostly the fact that I like the looks better and I couldn't get anything newer than my dad's truck and his is an 88. I also had a budget of $2500 max. I like all the features that my 84 has over the 72.

Some of us doooooo..........

ChrisK10 05-21-2003 08:10 PM

what i like

Well my 79 isn't here still.

The reason why I like the 73-87's better is because I think they look better when raised as a 4x4 than a raised 4x4 67-72. I wanted a 4x4, so this is what I'm getting. However, if it was a 2wd, I'd like to have a 67-72. I am growing more to the liking of that style... (especially after I see my cousin's 69 c10 custom camper special). That truck is a cherry.

The way I look at it, it's a WIN-WIN situation either way! :D

:burnout:

there are great things about both. i like the roomier cab of the 73-87's and the body style looks better imo. i would love to have one of each...and maybe i will some day...but 73-87s are much cheaper and easier due to the abundance of parts.

My dad gave me the 74 back in 84. It had been given up for dead. Most of my experience and goof ups have been courtesy of this truck. I have grown to love them since that is what I had. I am glad to see so many cool ones now. Used to be I never saw one that was done the way I liked.

67-72's have such cool lines. I love those rounded wheels stuffed with a big wheel. So I have both.

TC70C10 05-22-2003 08:16 AM

I think you should have at least one of each. My 70 C-10 came first, 5 years ago and I added the 81 K5 last fall. Both are easy to work on and no electronic crap to diagnose.

jon_volk 05-22-2003 08:47 AM

well i had just bought a 70 chevelle and was looking for a 68-72ish truck but i found my 83 just down the street from me for cheap so i just bought it. i sorta felt buyers remorse afterward b/c i really wanted an older truck but the damn thing kept growin on me...whenever i think of selling it for an older on i keep deciding not to b/c i like it so much.

Bill W 05-22-2003 09:37 AM

I bought my 78 4x4 for $1000. At first I thought I wanted to change out he front clip for the 81 and newer sheetmetal but I've grown to like the brick like, square front end and now I prefer the 73 - 80? front end over all else.

Bill
