Full porterbuilt 66 with LY5.. Need info on changing oil pan !!

2 Attachment(s)
have 07 LY5 + 4l60e going in my 66. I have not changed a pan on these engines before. I am assuming my pan will not fit as this motor is from an 07 Tahoe and is the truck application.

Do I need a new pick up?

New gasket?

Which pan fits with a truck that lays frame?

If there is anything i am missing please let me know and thanks again. Love this forum :metal:

Kris

i believe you would need a camaro oil pan, pick up and screen. Thats what im using on my lm7 5.3 swap in my 1986gmc with a dropmember.

Judging from that first pic, you're going to need a 4th Gen Camaro pan, all others will hang below the crossmember a bit, unless you raise the engine.

Don't cheap out like me and buy a used f-body pan for $100, then discover a crack, then take it to the shop to be welded, then get a call from the shop demanding $250, then tell the shop to go somewhere and do something intimate to themselves, then settling on $150 for said 5 minute repair, then having $250 into a used, welded oil pan.

Total investment:

-trip to guy's house, dig through his shed, almost get stung. 1 hour + $100
-degreasing, scraping, discovering crack, wife yells at you for making a mess. 1 hour.
-trip to the shop, drop-off pan. 30 minutes.
-another trip to the shop, pick-up pan and engage in not so friendly discussion. 30 minutes +$150
-dress-up repairs because they suck. 30 minutes.
-being pissed off, bad for my blood pressure.
-not sure if repair is going to hold.

So that's 3.5 hours away from my family on saturday morning for $50. Being cheap ain't easy!

GET THE NEW PAN KIT.

Jim,

I just received my pan. Is the install straight forward as i think, anything i would need to know having this be my first time? Did you use a sealant around the gasket ? if so what type?

Thanks for the help

Kris

Re: Full porterbuilt 66 with LY5.. Need info on changing oil pan !!

A few of the LS swap/rebuild books recommend a bead of sealant/silicone where the pan meets the block and the front and rear covers. I did this, as did many others I've talked to.

And make sure you lube the pick up tube o-ring when installing into the oil pump. Other than that pretty straightforward.

Re: Full porterbuilt 66 with LY5.. Need info on changing oil pan !!

And make sure u "square it" at rear .....pan becomes part of the bellhousing mounting pattern...Google "installing Ls oil pan" and use their recommendations .....housing can crack if pan not aligned with block at rear......jim

Guys ran into a problem on the install. See the pics.. the oil pickup does not fit with the tray. Did you guys get a new tray, cut or hammer this one to work, or just do away with it??

Thanks

Kris

Mine came with pump AND camaro windage tray .....is that stock tray??

Re: Full porterbuilt 66 with LY5.. Need info on changing oil pan !!

If you have the LS1 pan you need the ls1 windage tray and pickup tube. The LS1 pickup tube is a lower profile tube and will not fit with the truck style windage tray

Sorry for being the NOOB..

But I cant find the answer so hopefully this thread can be helpful to some in the future + me.

Got the ls1 windage tray. But it is shorter than the stock tray. and does not cover the entire crank area (see pic) do place it toward the front or rear of engine?

Thanks

It's been a while since I installed mine but doesn't the pump pickup tube determine the placement of the tray?? Seems like that's what I found....sorry for the cobwebs!!!......jim

Wait I found it....study the pics here..........

it's installed correctly....it should be labled front/rear and it goes in the bolts closest to the flexplate like you have it. Good luck on the rest of your build! I can't wait to start mine...wet-sump ls7...:metal:
