any thoughts?

Re: opinions?
i think that if you pull a fith wheel then you need the dully or if it is a wrecker or dump or what ever then yes you do but if she is just a toy and you dont pull a lot then no you dont just my .02
|
Re: opinions?
its more my toy that ill be driving i want to able to show it itll be converted to a 4x4 once i find a axle. most itll pull is dirtbikes quads maybe a boat or cars and trucks. wont have a fifth wheel or anything
|
Re: opinions?
will my d70 be fine? or should i swap to my 14bolt
|
Re: opinions?
Don't need a dually to pull a 5th wheel.
|
Re: opinions?
I do that kind of hauling with my 1/2 ton SWB. You shouldn't need the DRW, unless you are exceeding 12k GVW rating.
|
Re: opinions?
mud man is right you dont need a dully for a fith but i find it to be more stable. if you have a d70 i would use that just fine. i dont see way you would have to find a 14 bolt but i am no expert on rear ends... yet. i have 14 bolts and they work great but would think a d70 is stronger but maybe wrong?
|
Re: opinions?
i have both rear ends already,i have a srw bed thats in ok shape. wheels tires just trying to find a front d44 or 60 im straight axling it
|
Re: opinions?
I just picked up a 79’ K-30 Cheyenne 4X4 because it was a SRW.
Up here the ranchers & loggers run DRW because they often overload the max load capacity. The first thing they do when they get into deep mud or snow is pull off those outside sets & run SRW, the inner sets track behind the front set/tires with allot less resistance rather than cutting separate ruts like the outers tend to do = better forward motion :sumo: |
Re: opinions?
i wish mine was a k30 but its not so time to make it one lol
i can get away with swappin beds and almost be done? lol |
Re: opinions?
Understood , I fell into mine.
I got it from a friend who shopped around quite a bit looking for this one. When he found it, it had a cracked head so he put a ZZ3 crate motor in it. Then he went out and bought a 3500 Big Horn Dodge ( :pty:) , the K-30 has been sitting since 2006. I have 1995 GMC SLE HD-1/2 w/102,000 mi. So I wasn't looking when the K-30 came along. It allways to be that way |
Re: opinions?
befor i got mine it was sitting since 02 started up first try once we put a battery and gas in it

any more thoughts?

Re: opinions?
I would swap to SRW. I have 2 K30`s both SRW, I`ve had over 2 tons in the bed of my reg cab. I think the D70 rear was a dually only rear. I would swap over to the 14. You don`t really need the front 60 from the sounds of what you are doing. I like the K30 because I haul lots of scrap in it, and it plows in the winter, so I like the beef of the 60. It also makes a diff here on taxes and reg with a DRW, I would need Commercial plates if it were a DRW.

Re: opinions?
A Dana 60 is the same strenght as a 14bolt full floater and a D70 is stronger yet.:metal:
|
Re: opinions?
ima keep my 70 out back and probally just throw a 44 under the front for now
|
Re: opinions?
hummer h1 rims and tires for cheap and they will bolt right up on your dually with no need for spacers
trailworthyfab.com for the stock hummer wheels (i would get the 12 bolt wheels) 100dollarman.com for the Wrangler radials 37x12.50x16.5 - Hummer Tires just take a look $100 tops for a 37" tire is cheap |
Re: opinions?
thats my plan to run the humvee 37" take offs it should get around a 8" lift once its done i still need to find a axle and springs
|
Re: opinions?
http://www.extremeaxlesales.com/used...lhubspair.aspx
this is where i got the drw hubs for my srw dana 60 so theres no need to limit yourself on finding just a drw dana 60 the only diffrence is hubs and rotors and the rotors are way cheaper then what your running now lol the same website may have a dana 60 and idk how much they are you would have to call/email and see. theres no need to pay over 500 for a dana 60 after all its just an axle idk why people think there made of gold |

If you are worried about towing, I can tell you I pull a 28 ft 10,000 lbs enclosed trailer (not a 5th wheel) all the time with mine (accross country) and it pulls very nice, very stable. I always use a distribution hitch of course,,,and I keep "E" load range tires on it. For a single rear wheel 1 ton,,,,it's a very nice tow machine. Wheel base is long enough for a nice stable ride. I bought the single wheel 1 ton purposely because I liked the manuverability in tighter spaces, easier to fit in the garage, and I don't have to buy an extra pair of tires that cost nearly $200 a piece. It's a 1 ton truck in every way,,,just doesn't have another set of tires. If I ever replace this truck again,,,,the only thing I'd change is getting a 3+3 for the extra seating space, and the longer wheel base would ride even better. |

Dana 60 Hypoid offset is only 1.125" The 14 bolt is 1.5" Dana 60 has a 1.625" pinion dia with a 10 spline or 29 spline 14 Bolt has a 1.75" pinion with 30 spline. Dana 60 has a 9.75" ring gear diameter 14 Bolt has a 10.5" ring gear diameter. Dana 60 has a 1.31" diameter axle shaft with either 16 or 30 spline. 14 bolt has a 1.5" diameter axle shaft with a 30 spline. Dana 60 has a axle tube diameter of 3.125" but wall thickness varies from .250" to .560" 14 bolt has a axle tube diameter of 3.48" but wall thickness varies from .215" to .492" Dana 60 torque rating is 5500 lbs. for a short duration 14 bolt torque rating is 6242 lbs max. Dana 60 gross axle weight is 6500 lbs. 14 bolt gross axle weight is 8600 lbs. Dana 60 maximum recommended tire diameter is 38" 14 bolt maximum recommended tire diameter is 44" These specs are comparing the Dana 60 full floater to a 14 bolt full floater. Looking at these same specs,,,the Dana 70 is nearly identical in most every way with the 14 bolt full floater,,,so I wouldn't say the 70 is stronger,,,probably more on equal terms. |
Re: opinions?
Sorry for a dumb question : How do I tell which one I have in my 79' K-30?
|
Re: opinions?
i might be getting a drw dana 60 front complete hoping cheap out of a 83 chevy crew if not its just gonna get a 44 up front and a srw bed
|
Re: opinions?
My mistake on the D60 to 14 bolt comparison as fully printed out to see, haha. But either diff will take a lot of abuse, just remember the D44 front of a 1/2 ton and 3/4 ton are the same ring gear size. The D60 front would rock.
