radiator overflow tank
 

Can anybody prove if a radiator overflow tank came on these trucks from the factory? Or was it dealer installed? I have seen 2 or 3 different tanks that are supposedly "factory", which one is correct and where does it mount? Post pictures please. Thanks.

They were dealer installed, and I think there was an option in 71 and 72...I'd have to go home and go through my stuff though.

my 72 did not come with it, but i am trying come up with something for a tank under the batt tray.

any ideas ???

longhornmail, I was told by Big Orange that you would be the one to ask. I met him recently. Can you provide any photos of the factory or dealer tanks?

I don't have a pic. But it was mounted to the raditor support above the vlotage reg. Hose was routed down from the rad. cap under the rad., then up to the overflow tank.

I have a PO mod that includes a Snapple bottle with a hole in the center of the cap...when I bought my truck I was thinkin' WTF? hahaha...I didn't realize what it was. Took me a while to figure it out :D

So what would have been there without the dealer add-on? Just a hose draining to the ground?

With no bottle, there was just a hose going to the ground. If you look down the side of the rad on the passenger side, there is a small hole there. The hose was run down through the hole and ended just past the hole.
This is the G.M. part number 994230 overflow tank kit introduced in September of 71. It had a MSRP of $10.95. This may or may not have been a factory item as installed on the assembly line...I can not locate my '72 stuff, but it is in fact a dealer add on under said part number.

I understand the snapple bottle. My current bottle is a 2 litter Mt Dew bottle with a hole in the cap. It works OK, just looks funny. I would like to make it more original equipment like when I get around to fixing up this truck. I'm stock piling the needed parts slowly. I need to post some pictures of the truck one day.

this is what i use,its a mid 80's buick olds or pontiac fan shroud with integral tanks for overflow and washer.

I got another washer bottle and bracket and mounted it on the other side. Kinda ballances things out a bit. All I need to do now is install a rad and put a hose on it.

XXL - yeah the stock (non dealer addons) ones drained on the Ground. I just got new inner fender wells and they to come with the 1/2" hole, where your hose would drop through to let is drain. The hole is on right inner fender if you look down between the Batt and the rad. cap

Ive always used one from a 90 Suburban as it fits the wheel well perfect and they can still be bought from Chevy dealers for about $14.. Gives it a stock look. I mounted one from Napa just inside the grill on the core support on the truck I sold "rusty70 a few months ago. It worked well except it could be seen silghtly through the grill. I only bought that one because the dealer was back ordered on the Suburban one.

So this isn't factory???

tee, that looks exactly like the one from pep boys($9.95). The vertical rods on the rear have loops on the top to put a bolt through. The pep boys model does not have the bracket on the bottom like yours but it looks like it was "tacked" by po. I bent the rods so it would mount to fender.

This is where the dealer installed it on my 70 when it were new. According to the owner's son, even in the south it was a crappy place to put it. They had to replace it every other year or so due to cracking from cold. Guess sitting out like that it wouls catch all the winter winds.

Here is where this one was notice the washer jug on the left also. Kind of weird. Randy

teeitup, I thought yours was factory, but someone had cut the loops of the top and welded a bracket to the bottom. Everything I had seen/heard till now made me think that jwill41's tank was the correct one, except the ears were straight up and it bolted on the drivers side of the radiator support toward the engine. But he said it was from Pep boys, I just don't know. Seems like no 2 people have the same tanks. Oh well!!!

my (69) just has a tube that runs from the radiator to a tube that runs right through a hole in the right inner fender, almost straight below the batt. tray.

I think a couple of other guys have used washer fluid tanks for over-flows to run at the track.

I found this on a c/10 setting on the side of the road in Delaware 2 days ago looks original dunno though.

mine is on the LS fender, maybe it's my jar in a weird place though.....

No, it's supposed to be on the drivers side fender. I've seen a dozen different radiator overflow bottles mounted in as many different places. I think people just used what they had, even the dealership.

Used to be an oxygen tank from some sort of emergency respirator.

Like "longhornmail" said - just mount another washer bottle. This was on my 69 when I bought it. It actually had a 3/8 clear hose running to the rad.
