tips before I pull my engine and trans. ????
My neighbor borrowed me his engine hoist with leveler last night so I will be pulling the engine and trans out of my 81 shorty in the next few days. I want to pull the engine and trans all together if I could. The front clip is on the truck and prefer not to take it off right now if I don't have to. I have the drivers side exhaust manifold off and the passenger side has only the far rear bolt in it that I can't seem to get out although there is only a few inches of actual exhaust pipe on the end of the manifold. I unhooked most of the stuff and have removed the carburetor........ Any and all helpful tips would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance, RIZ :metal: |

Drain the transmission, because you will lose fluid once the driveshaft is removed and you start removing the assembly.
Take off the hood, remove the radiator. Get a helper. Have a place to store the engine/trans when removed, I wouldn't leave it hanging from the houst or just sitting on the floor. Have lots of rags and cleaning supplies handy to clean up the mess you are about to make :) |

at least one helper its heavier than it looks make sure you put the truck on jack stands high so you have the room to swing the motor and trans I try to put a dam up with the rags for the fluid because no matter how much you drain there is always more than youve let out once you start disassembling things make sure you put things in labelled bags where they go back and photograph things for future refrence I try to use pieces of masking tape and write numbers on them for the wiring harness so plug 1 goes on sender 1 2 goes on 2 etc etc makes it easier to figure out even if youre putting in a totally different engine |

Plastic baggies for nuts and bolts.

To make life easy I always take off the front clip not hard to do at all. Yes it is a little more work but well worth it to have the room.

take a million detail pics of everything before tear down, and all fastners/brackets should be bagged and labeled

Ziplock bags, black sharpie, kitty litter for any mess on the ground. Remove fan, shroud, radiator. Floor jack under rans helps while pulling every thing out. Make sure e-brake cables dont get caught on trans. Good luck and have fun.

Cover your intake with duct tape so you dont drop stuff in there. Sharpie and zip lock bag all nuts and bolts. For sure take a few photos of it before removal, helps remember where lines/brackets/hoses etc. are at.

X2 on kitty litter/oil dry, lots of it! A transmission snout plug will save you alot of grief too.
Make sure the bolts that are holding the engine to the hoist are quality bolts, threaded in deep, and seated against the lifting device. And what everybody else said. |
Re: tips before I pull my engine and trans. ????
I removed my front tires and lowered the front axle on a set of blocks. This was the only way the engine/trany&t-case would clear the front radiator support bracket. It made it alot easier hooking everything up to the new engine.

Cool thread ...
Big piece of plywood screwed to a set of sawhorses to spread out all your stuff. Also, the next time I do this Im gonna make sure I've got enough extra shop time to clean-up and detail the engine bay while the motor is out. Posted via Mobile Device |
