Send me in the right direction on what rear end
Ive got a 79 blazer and after breaking the pinion yoke on my factory 12 bolt this weekend ive decided to upgrade my axles. I hear people talking about 14 bolts and dana 60s or they say yeah i have 1 ton or 3/4 axles under it. What i would like to know is what trucks came with what? Did 3/4 and 1 ton 4x4s both have the same front axles? how can i tell a dana 60 and a 14 bolt apart? also will any 73-87 chevy blazer burb truck 3/4 or 1 ton axle bolt right in? or is there diffrences in driveshafts and spring perches or width?

Re: Send me in the right direction on what rear end
What trucks came with Front Dana 60s:
GM 1977-87 K30 1 ton 4wd 1984-88 CUCV 1988-91.5 V30 All GM / Chevy versions were passenger side differential, regular rotation (low pinion) gears, disc brakes, 35 spline inners, 30 spline outers, internal style hubs, and kingpin knuckles. Dodge 1975-89 D-600 1992-93 D-600 1981-89 D-700 1992-93 D-700 All these Dodge versions were passenger side differential, regular rotation (low pinion) gears, disc brakes, 35 spline inners, 30 spline outers, and kingpin knuckles. 1979-89 versions had external style hubs, with the earlier versions with full-time NP203 Transfer cases having external drive flanges, and later models having external lockout hubs. The external lockout hub bolt pattern is 8 x 3.960". The 90-93 versions had internal style hubs just like the Chevy and lockout hubs. One caution with dodge applications, is you have to be careful to avoid the Dana 61 front axle. 1987-88 and 1991-93.5 Dodge D600 and D700 also came with Dana 61. More info on the Dana 61 later in the article. 3/4 Ton GM Trucks have 2 front axle options, Dana 44HD (70s) and 10 Bolt (late 70s and early 80s) 1 Ton GM Trucks came with Dana 60s 14 Bolt rear ends can be found in 1973-87 GM 3/4-tons Alxe ID Chart Link: http://www.cdmfabrication.com/bbpics/axlechart.jpg The axles you are looking at will be a direct bolt in to your 79 Blazer. The only modifcation you will need to make is your ujoints. 3/4 and 1 ton run 1350 and 1410 size ujoints vs 1/2 ton 1310. So you will need to make new drivelines or get the ujoints that have two sizes in one(as a temp fix). Hope this helps |

Re: Send me in the right direction on what rear end
If you can find a 14ff out of roughly the same year as your truck, it will be a bolt in except the yoke. One out of an 80s will work, but the brake cables are different style. Also, out of a 1 ton you will have to move the spring perches in. You can get a 1310/1350 conversion joint. It's the same for the front, no conversion joint, I think you might have to change brake hoses, but not 100% on that.

i also found a military surplus place here local that has dana 60 fronts and 14bolt rears locked with 4.56 gears for 1350. i thought that sounded pretty good |
Re: Send me in the right direction on what rear end
No the front will bolt in, only difference may be the brake lines. Got ahead of myself with the other post....
Those axles will work, just need to move the perches for the rear.... |

When beefing up an old Blazer in the past the easiest/cheapest way was buy a square body K20 Suburban. They are cheap and usually have a Dana 44HD front and 14 bolt rear. I bought this running 1979 with a good 400 sb, Turbo400 mated to a good working 203 transfer case with a planetary/shaft replacement style part time kit, tilt wheel, wagon style 8 lug 15"wheels, and many other good parts for $600 and parted it out. Parts of it are still going down the highway today in multiple vehicles. |
