Hatch Handle Removal

I'm having some trouble getting the pin at the bottom of the shaft of the hatch handle on my Blazer. PB Blaster doesn't seem to be working. Here's the thing: the handle itself is actually broken off anyway so it's junk anyway. Knowing that, what would be my best course of action? I'd like to get this replaced. I'm getting awful tired of that thing banging every time I go over a bump.

I had the same problem. took a grinder and cut the shaft then replaced with garage door handle from home depot

That's what I was thinking. Did you just cut it right where the pin goes through? Did it come out alright after that?

Yup like pound said, cut it off with a grinder (I used a hack saw) about where the pin is but save the whole cam mechinism if possible. Knock the square stock out of the cam and slide in a garage door handle (I got mine at Lowes, but China makes em all the same) then pin it on the other side of the split ring. Instafacto new handle! I know your pain mine came off and stayed off for two years because I was looking for a replacement handle. Not enough money or availability for that, I kick myself for not doing it sooner!

Re: Hatch Handle Removal

I searched for posts on hatch handle removal - great posts here on the forum have helped me get to this point but I can't seem to get the handle to slide out. I removed the cotter pin (well tried and it broke). The handle does not slide/move in and out, it seems to be stuck and moves in unison with everything.

I have disconnected the side bars, removed the angle retainer palte but can't get any farther. Any suggestions? I have sprayed it with CorrosionX but it doesn't seem to be doing anything. Do I need to give up and saw off. Will applying heat help ? - that might be tricky with the fiberglas.

I don't want to mess up the handle if I can help it. The chrome is in great shape - I just need to have it rekeyed and secure side bars so the handle is oriented horizontally rather than poping up on one side when reinstalled.

Thanks for your help.

I'm in the same place as PDXk5. Anyone know how to get this apart?

Same here. Once my used handle comes in, I'm likely just going to cut it in half.

I would suggest you cut it to get it out and then punch it through. If you were reusing. I got mine free with a c clamp at one end of the shaft and the other end hooked to the metal bracket and pressed it out.
