Anyone else ever sold a part WAY to cheep ?
 

I was such a Frigin Dummy. I sold a nearly perfect 72 Chevy grill for 30 Bucks ! It had a little chip on the underside of the grill where you stick your fingers to open the hood. I painted it the original silever/grey. Drove up to his place he said that he had a fule cell that would fit between my frame rails. Yha right if I had a long box and moved the cross member back 10 inches. I told him I had a shorty. What ever.

Super pissed the guy really took advantage of me. I guess being a 18 year old kid when I said "40 dollars" he said "I will give you 30" I did not know how to say "your are freeking nuts" What a freaking prick.:mad:

I guess it's good that lesson happned when I was young. I know now to tell the next person who wants to buy somthing from me and offer me even less than I was asking from the start (being already a steel) To tell them to get serious . I hope I dont ever see that B****rd again ! What a prick.

Happens to all of us, sometimes more than once. And yes, 40.00 was probably too cheap! People are jerks to even suggest a lower price, when it is already a bargain. I do barter on price, but not if I know I'm already getting a deal.

yeah one last swap meet i went to i was trying to get rid of everything so i had nothing to haul home and i wound up selling a pair of 87 suburban bumpers for $50 and these where immaculate but i did not want to load them up and carry them home now i wish i never did it.

Here's a trick I have heard, but never tried. Tell them to make an offer. When they do just say "That's not good enough" and then BE QUIET. Keep doing that until they quit going up or down or whatever. Supposed to work pretty good whether you are buying or selling.

Krue, guess why people on here don't like that "make an offer" crap? Set your price and let them take it or leave it. That haggling & bidding on here has created more trouble on this board then it is worth.
We have all sold some things too cheap. Just as bad is shipping. You will use the internet calculators, do an estimate, and something will be different or special and it will cost you a bunch more to ship it...after you have agreed on the price. You just "suck it up" and move on. Same with selling parts. Try and find out what it is worth, set your price and try to get it. If you sell it too low, it is not the buyers fault...unless they use a gun.

you know... sometimes it's okay to do somebody a favor or help them out a bit, but if they're a lech... screw 'em. charge 'em full price.

it's really sad that some people are always trying to pull a fast one.

You know its all KARMA!! Something good will come of the misfortunes. you never know! that person that bought the grill, may have other issues later for taking advange of you. Or soon something better will fall your way for cheap. Think of it in a positive way

I'm retired and try to find good buys, and rather it be a business with the best buy or private party purchase its still the best price.

Last day of swap meet is the best, since people don't want to pack it back up to haul home.

My feeling is if you set the price, you haven't been ripped off or cheated. You received what you wanted on the item. The guy buying may not really know what the true cost should have been.

I think that like Bluebeard said, if you set the price and you are getting what you agreed to then the buyer is not the bad guy.

With the advent of the web, prices have gone up on parts as will happen with supply and demand. The web acts to reduce the effects of arbitrage but still in local areas prices can vary significantly on parts. A good example is if I have some Ford parts
that I thought was worthless and sold them to someone who knew that they were very valuable and did not tell me. This would not make me feel bad as I got what I asked for.

Does anyone feel that when they buy a part at the local yard that they need to let the yard owner know for example that a pair of tow hooks is worth $200 when he only charged them $20?

If someone feels that they need to get top price out of anything, then E-bay is a very good market for most everything. I like to think that this group is made up of truck enthusiasts and prices we charge each other are based more on our cost then what we can get on e-bay for parts.

Next time try Ebay. From what I have seen this is definitely a seller's market with no real deals or bargains for the buyer. Top dollar is paid for items sold.

I "give" good parts away all the time. I only do this to help friends out because I don't need the parts, usually get them for free anyhow, and I know how tight money is. Look on the bright side, you probably made his day and his intention probably wasn't to take advantage of you anyhow. If you had asked $100, he would have offered you 90. (I would)

I have to agree with PICKMUP. If your interested in getting market value for something then you have to do your homework. I have knowingly sold things for well under market value just because I did not want to have to sit on them until someone came along that would pay the price. No offense to those of you trying to make a dime on trading/selling parts but I really prefer to deal with guys like me who are just hobbyists. I have gotten my best buys this way and I try to send the good KARMA along to the next guy when I am selling.

All you have to do is say NO! PS selling something on this board is more like running a classified (ie advertising) than bargaining IMHO.

An antique dealer over here bought a jewelled case for $3000 and sold it for $50000!

The buyer then sold it at auction for $1.5M.

Thats a true story from the newspaper last week.

Around here none of us is in the parts business. I look at it this way. If you have spare parts for your truck then obviously the persons interested in them are fellow 67-72 owners. Most of my 67-72 truck-owner friends have spare parts laying around like myself. We usually make trades and if someone doesn't have what I need, then I'll just say "take it! I'll get something off you next time!" But money never changes hands.

Well, I think I might have given away a locker. Haven't heard a peep from the guy since I sent it to him. Does that count?
