FORD oil filter on a chevy 283?
My old 283 has a Ford spin on long oil filter installed on it and I am wondering why?
I bought the filter called for in the parts book for a chevrolet 1964 vintage and it does not fit. I had to buy one for a Ford..... What's up with that? |
Re: FORD oil filter on a chevy 283?
Sounds like someone has installed a spin-on filter conversion kit on your engine. It originally would have had a cartridge type filter inside a re-useable metal canister.
And I believe there are two types of spin-on conversion kits available. One style keeps the original bypass valve that bolts to the block and uses a newer Chevy style spin-on filter. The other style (like you have) eliminates the bypass valve and takes a Ford style spin-on filter that has the bypass valve inside the filter. |

Years ago I added one of those adapters to my very first 283 V8, and it also used a Ford filter.

Had one on the 64 GMC I had with a 327. Bought the Chevy adapter to set things straight.

All the Chevy V-8's built prior to '68 used a canister oil filter. Most of the cansiter to spin on adapters use a Ford filter.
