Need a tire size suggestion.
So the front tires on my 66 are currently 235/60/15, on mickey thomspon 15x8 wheels. That was what the po put on....my question is, what would you recommend switching to? The 235/60/15 is a little wide for the front, although it does fit just fine, I'm not sure if that much width is needed. The other issue is the cost of the tires, while not the most expensive, they seem to be a much less common size tire on 15. Any suggestions?
Fwiw, this is the front tires ONLY, so don't worry about the speedo being off...since this thing has always had different wheels and tires on it, I have no idea if the size is what it "should" be. |
Re: Need a tire size suggestion.
Is the truck lowered? If it's stock I've seen a 31" tire on the front. That tire is real small fora full size truck, have the same size on the front of my car. Maybe a 235/70?

Re: Need a tire size suggestion.
Any size tire will fit on an 8" wheel. I had an 87 that had the factory 8s and had 225/75s on it. They fit, but didn't look the greatest.
I saw after the fact that the truck is lowered. If you want to keep a fat tire (which a lowered truck should have IMO) a 255 or 275/60 would look good I think. If not, then the 235 I mentioned earlier or a 255 would work too. |

I just don't recommend a narrower tire on an 8" wheel because it looks stretched vs what's typically utilized on the rear. I'm fine w/a 225/75 on an 8" wheel if a 275/60 is used on a 10" wheel as it keeps the sidewall proportions (stretch) symmetrical. 225's on an 8" wheel in front & 275's (or greater) on an 8" wheel in the back is a no-go for me. |
Re: Need a tire size suggestion.
The truck is roughly 4" dropped in the front, and I DO plan to keep the 8" wide wheel. The tire looks fine in the wheel well, maybe a little small but not much. I'll take a look at some "bigger" tires, i just don't want to run my inner fender well at all.
Scoti, did you mean a 255/60 or a 255/75? |

I've never heard of a 255-75 series tire in a 15" diameter. If you want a narrower front tire that offers a bit more height, the 225-70 is a good size (235-60 = 26.1" OD; 225-70 = 27.4" OD). |
Re: Need a tire size suggestion.
I'm running a 245-60 on a 15x9" rim on the front of my Silverado with a 4" drop on the front :metal:

Re: Need a tire size suggestion.
I've found both 235/70 and 225/70's for the same price, both rated for light trucks (not really sure about running pass car tires on this thing w/ a v8)
I'd say those are prob my best bet for the price and availability, as well as the rating right now. |

I honestly didn't know that. I always thought there was a "reason" but I guess if my drag radials hold up fine with a load in the bed (long story), then a car tire would be fine up front haha.
