V8 or stick with the old six
I love my truck. It's fun to drive. And when I pop the hood it's cool to see people react to the six.... But, I have a real mean 327 sitting in the garage.
Here's a link with some pics of the truck. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...=489507&page=2 What do you guys think? V8 or 6 Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: V8 or stick with the old six
My 6 looks like yours but with three carbs and an offey valve cover I love it but I want some more power. As far as looks go you can't beat it.

Dude that six you have in there is awesome. I would stay with that. Everyone has v8s. I think cool sixers are much cooler.

I say V8 with a good duration on the cam, love the way it sounds..

Re: V8 or stick with the old six
I'm right there with ya. I can't decide between keeping this smooth running 6 that's already in there AMD just throwing a t-5 behind it, or going a cammed lq9 T56 combo. Hard decision.

Re: V8 or stick with the old six
I'm in the same boat, have a six with petronics, power steering and headers. The six runs so smoothly and is so durable itll take anything you throw at it. I kept the six bc i thought the sbc would do horrible on gas vs the L6 but after all the research i figured i was wrong. Hot rod parts for the six are expensive and dont even think about an aluminum head. I want a 283 or 327 and a 700r4. But in the back of my head I will miss my six and every time I drive it I change my mind about the sbc but I want more power

Re: V8 or stick with the old six
Do the t5, keep the six. like someone said, everyone has a V8, the t5 will help a little with mileage, look at your rearend gears, I think a 3.73 would be best with a t5 anyway.

Re: V8 or stick with the old six
I love my SIX...its a Bomb to drive and NEVER breaks NEVER a problem put gas in it and Drive it......I LOVE IT.
I would leave it in but at 55 mph it screams for another gear, So im putting my New 327 in with a All New 700r4. But Im keeping my SIX for future use....Its Very strong, |
Re: V8 or stick with the old six
Well after ALOT of deliberation, thought and beer, I have actually completely started over on my 'Burb drivetrain. We started out with a '90 TBI 350, then we upgraded to the 427 with TBI from a 454. Well along came a gentleman that was REALLY interested in my 427 AND had the $100 bills to back up his interest.
So, we're sitting here bench racing, and trying to come up with something........back to the basics, keep it simple, keep it clean, keep it useable for daily errands. So, just scored a 250 L6 from a buddy at the machine shop, they are going thru it, making some small changes and in we go, backed up with the 700R4 trans, and with any luck, adding a turbo. I've had alot of engine combinations, from a 2.5L 4 popper to a 526 Keith Black blown alcohol motor in various rides. But still think the ole sixes are pretty cool. JMO |

Re: V8 or stick with the old six
I faced the same decision, I've got a mild 327 in the garage and a 250 L6 that runs great. The 6 is very smooth and reliable but doesnt quite satisfy my needs for power/torque/acceleration. A properly tuned v8 can also match the fuel economy of a 6, so for me, its v8.

Fortunately our shop has been really busy this summer, unfortunately, not much time for the 'Burb. There's been several forums about the turbo sixes and I just couldn't keep from going back to that idea. There's some really cool stuff out there. Found the turbo manifold and it's on the way. doing a little research on possibly adding port EFI while we're here. it helps that my machine shop guy is currently building a 4 cyl turbo for a Rambler- basically the same engine as the 250 minus 2 cylinders. So we're both learning as we go. |
Re: V8 or stick with the old six
I am going with the original rebuilt 230 on my 65 because it came with the truck I got from my dad. Had it not come with the engine I wouldve gone with a sbc for sure. Lovethe idea of going with the orig. 6 but I wouldnt have put much effort in gong that route if I had no engine because sbc optionsare way more common and comparible in price.
