Andy said, "LET THERE BE TORQUE!" (longhorn update)

Well, I had the wife help pull the longhorn up into the drive the other night, she pulled in the GMC making lots of noise, smoke, and she left a rather impressive 'happy mark' most they way up the drive. (Sometimes she makes me so proud)
I guess I did it just in time, becouse it turns out the local police have been ticketing all vehicles on the road for more than 24 hrs, or not registered, or parked backwards. Mine's been sitting there for 3 weeks (or so) and has 1970 tags that are basicly fictitious. (yup, had to look up that word) Anyways, the following morning, a cruiser pulled up and looked at the Longhorn up in the drive, and then ran the numbers on the GMC which was parked on the curb, but the pipes were still ticking from heat since I had just gotten home not even 3 min before. Looks like some one finally complained.
Bummer I beat them to the punch, well, bummer for them anyways.
So, with the Blazer rusting in the good ole 'junk yard in the sky', (took it to the local yard last weekend) I have time to mess with the 'horn.
I did a little this, and a little that, but I am getting impatient, and want to hear the dang thing make some noise. I figured pipes can wait, the time has come.
I grab the fire ext just in case, and dumped a little go-go juice into the beast's throat. I hit the key and I am rewarded with nothing, just cranking over. So i go and plug in the power wire to the HEI (forgot to turn off the ignition switch) and I was rewarded with the engine kicking backwards a little...but it was enough to make me almost crap my pants.
I try it again and it hardly cranks over. So I back the timing down a hair and grab the charger. Hooked it up and sat down for a smoke and a dew while it charges.
So then I hit the key again...and I am rewarded with the same, slowly cranking over. So I backed it down a bit more...actually I moved all the wires over one position and put the distributor back where it was originally. I reach in, kinda starting to get a little bummed out that she didn't fire on the first crank.
WOAH NELLIE!!!!! That beast leapt to life making more noise than a frikken pro stock car does at 10,000 RPM. Well, maybe it wasn't that loud, but my son who was doing his home work sure thought so.
It settled to an idle of about 1100 (the choke was still on) and sounded meaner than my wife after I been drinking and roaming the town. I goosed it once and then killed her remembering I don't have a rad in it yet.
I really need to get a rad in there.

So now, things I need to do...
hook up the oil pressure guage...
figure why the volt guage don't come up whe iots running...
get some pipes under there...
And get a rad plumbed in there.

There's more that needs done, but that'll get it to where I can tune the pig.

Life is good. :burnout: :burnout: :burnout:
I'm happier than a puppy with two peckers... :D

Now if the rain will only stop for more than 30 min at a time...I might be set.
A guy from work is gonna check to see if there is a rad laying around in one of his shops to loan me. As soon as I ditch the GMC a new 4 core will be going in there.

GMC71k20 05-27-2003 11:38 PM

Longhorn Man 05-27-2003 11:39 PM

Fun reading, glad to get an update!

that's cool andy. i finally got my gmc to a point to where it'll run nicely. i'm surprised that the cops haven't been called on me yet. no exhaust pipes past the manifold makes it like a top fuel dragster. loud as all get out, and 20 foot tire tracks from a 3/4 ton pickup with 9.50 x 16.5 mud grips. i couldn't believe that that big thing could do that type of take off. anyhow, good luck with it.

griesel72 05-28-2003 02:23 PM

longhornmail,

You ought to be a writer, I could get a very good visual of what your weekend activities were.

crazy longhorn 05-28-2003 03:11 PM

bet it felt good to hear that old gal running:D crazyL

Longhorn Man 05-28-2003 07:22 PM

GMC71k20, the GMC will remain my daily driver untill i know the Longhorn is dependable. I can't afford to be sitting on the side of the road. I need this pig to be dead on right. Plus, I am hoping for some $$ to fall from the sky so i can paint the turd and get a whole bunch more longhorn spending money out of it. ;)
Smokeys will be as soon as I can gt it on the road and to the shop...private property and the owner does them on the lot him self!

griesel72, That is one of the many many dreams I have is to write automotive type articles...like for hot ron or car craft. If I ever get the chance to go back to school, that is what it will be for. I have submited a couple freelance articles to a few mags, but they all respond telling me I am close, but still a little rough around the edges. :(

crazy longhorn. you have no idea how good it felt..well, you probably do know, but still.... :D

Baradium 05-28-2003 08:09 PM

Nothing like bringing a vehicle back to life!

Longhorn Man 05-28-2003 11:37 PM

heh heh heh yup...3 times now too.
It is still a sitting eye sore, but it makes real neat sounds now!

racedvl 05-28-2003 11:54 PM

No, I have not started the swap as of yet. But I was able to drive my 69 today anyhow. . . . . :D

If I don't swap to disks, (btw, I don't think I have a front end to do it anyhow) once I start the swap, I don't think it will take anymore than 2 weekends. . . . :D

Longhorn Man 05-29-2003 12:04 AM

What do you mean you don't think you have the disc front end anymore?
You either do have it, or you don't.
Or did you leave it at the old place before buying the house?

racedvl 05-29-2003 11:46 PM

Well, TJ was gonna give me the one he got from Randy, but now looks like that actually might be getting installed on his 68. No big deal. But ya know what was really cool??? Driving the 69 to work today. . . ;)

Longhorn Man 05-30-2003 12:48 AM

It is cool isn't it?
It gets old though sometimes. Esp when your in a hurry and you need to gas up and everyone at the dang station wants to talk to you or try to buy it for 500 bucks...ect.
