g'day from aus

ok so i got a 65 longbed and the wall of the tub behind the cab had a crease in it causing it to be bent and was touching the cab it looked as if the PO had loaded up a harley or somthing and riden into the tub to hard or tied it foward to tight and creased the tub, i have now fixed the damage but wish to make it stronger
the question is have any of you had the same problem and how did you make it stronger it or do you have any good ideas on how to?

what he did was pulled the tie downs to tight and bent the front. I mount a wheel chock on a plate of sheet metal and then just tie down a bike. I can't haul a harley in my stepper as I'm using Jeep springs right now! I have a 400 lb. limit

yeh i got about 5+ inch drop but i run pump up air shocks so i can pump em up and lift it about 1.5 inch, have ya got any pics of your set up?
im look at a quick way to haul me bike asap. thanks kingy

Not now,I use a enclosed trailor when I need to haul something. Get a 1/4 in. x 6 in. flat piece of steel and make it long enough to weld a piece 90 degrees with bottom. then weld two straps from 90 at angle down to the flat piece. make sure the whole thing is long enough to let your bike sit on the whole lenghth. this will keep the front from buckling and help keep your bike upright so you can tie it off.

I used to haul my '72 Harley Davidson XLH Sportster in the back of my '66 GMC 1/2 Ton Short Bed Stepside. It fit in there perfectly. I would put the Front Wheel right in the L/F corner of the bed and position the bike so the Rear Wheel would end up R/R corner. I would then tie a rope (would probably use a strap now) from the Frame to a stake post in the L/F corner. It pretty much was "wedge in there". I believe I also would lock the steering to keep it more stable and in position. Although I drove extra carefully, it rode just fine. On a longer haul, I might have tied an extra rope around the back wheel to the R/R stake post.

My bike fit just fine in the back of my short fleet bed. Drove it right up on a ramp and stuck the front wheel in the drivers side corner. Couple of straps to hold it in place and your ready to go.

indian113- cheers thats what i had in mind thought someone might have a easier way but it seems like the quickest at the moment as i need room for at least 2 bikes for an up coming dirt drag event.


C10 - C90 Bill- ill be hauling my 72 ironhead and a mates trump so corner to corner may be out of the question, ill see how i go cheers for the info and hope ya still have your 72.

jonathan-m- thanks for the pic if i was just hauling my iron then corner to corner would be the go but i got a mates bike to so i might have to bite the bullet and make some ramp thingys up.

I have never had a problem with that. even with the newer thinner metal trucks.

Years ago we hauled bikes all the time in the back of a 64 3/4 ton, put the front tire against the front of the bed and sucked the bike down from the handlebars to the stake pockets with straps. Never had a problem bending the front panel.
