67-68 hood on 69-72 fenders?
 

Alright. I kinda was just thinking about a mod and figured I should write it down before I forget. I want my '67 to continue with it's slant nose as I dont like the flat noses on the '69 and up. But I was just looking at a pic of the fenders off a '69, and figured, what the hell. They look kool. Maybe if I shaved the markers on one and tried to get it to work with the '67 or '68 hood. I intent to use nothing about the original grill out of either model, because I want a full phantom grill. I was just thinking about this. How hard would it be to use a '67 or '68 hood on a '69-'72 fender? I could probably make some sort of latch. But I wouldnt use the stock latch from either also. I have been daydreaming about what Lotik has done for about a year and a half after seeing a couple of trucks in my Lowrider magazines with that mod. But do you think it'd be a decent mod and how it'd look and would it work? Thanks.

I saw a truck for sale today that has a '67 hood on it's '69 front clip. I noticed from the road that it didn't look quite right, so i went in for a closer look. The hood fit the contour of the fenders just fine, but the top crossbar in the grille had been removed to alow the hood to latch. Personally i think it looked pretty cool. With a phantom grille, it would look great!.

Hrmmm. That looks pretty sweet. Thats what I was thinkin about, just imagine that with a front roll pan, totally shaved phantom grill and no markers.... Hehe.

i got access to a good 67-68 hood, so i may try this. what other mods would i need to do to get the proper fit?

At closer look, that looks like a modified 69-70 hood.

The 69-up grille style is more upright than the 67/68. This meant that the hood design had to be shorter to compensate. One way to shorten is to make the angle of the front of the hood steeper which is what the designers did.

The GMC solution to this was different. They kept the same fender and basic grille design for all years. They did use the steeper angled hood in 69-72 however. Their solution was to increase the height of the top bar and let the more upright (shorter)hood set behind this bar. GMC grilles in 67/68 used a smaller top bar and the hood does not sit behind it to the same degree because the hood is longer.

So, spend a couple hundred for 67/68 fenders and radiator support to go with the hood. The aggrevation of making the same 69-72 parts fit your concept ain't worth the time. Spend the time elsewhere (like figuring out how you can possibly improve on the 67/68 grille design;) )

The pic above is probably a highly modified 69-72 hood. Based on what I said, it would be nearly impossible to cut down a 67/68 hood and have the remaining lines flow correctly into the cowl and door contours.

So all you wanting to try this, best go get a 69-up hood and modify it.

CPNE-Well, the whole point to a custom is to modify it. Make it NOT STOCK. I know the fenders arent the same only because of these little tiny angles that the 67-68's didn't have. So, I was thinkin, just make them fit somehow. The top of the fenders is the same, So, i dont know why it'd be so hard to change. Put a front roll pan on it, then a phantom grill, it wouldn't matter what you did really, because you could make it all flow....

Chill bro, just trying to help save you a bunch of hassle. I think I answered your original question:

In my opinion too much effort for the intended result. Time is money to me so spending a few bucks on fenders rather than fabbing the 69 style back to 67 makes big sense to me.

Also thought you'd like a little history on the reasons why changes were made. Interesting facts like this make the hobby fun don't ya know?

FYI, you may want to consider the core support, it's different too.

As for the hood, to do what's on that 72 pictured, you need a 69-up hood, otherwise the cuts to shorten will distort the lines.

No. I know exactly what these icons and stuff mean. I just think that my project is going to be totally different than anyone elses. I wasnt getting all hyped up. I was simply saying that they would work with some modifying of some parts I.E. core support.I mean, I know the look of a '67 is the baddest looking in my book, after all, I do own one also. But there's just something different about making a custom truck. I dont want anything I ever build to be like someone elses. I may pick apart a few things, such as the design of someones flames and incorporate it. I'm just trying to get ideas and thoughts about it, because I still am a long way from having the capability to modify stuff and make it still look good. lol. So, just to let ya know. I wasnt gettin mad, but I do wanna try this. Because if you look at the phantom grills for '67-68's they look small and weird. Take the fender shape of a '69-72 and use it's phantom or at least a mold for it. It may look better. I'll have to try it one day and tell ya how it works.

To achieve your custom grille without having it look "small and weird" I think what you want to do is modify a 69-up hood to give it the 67/68 "look". Just as in the pic. I interpreted your post as how to make an stock 67 hood work with 69-up fenders, as that was your question.

Anyway, anythings possible with enough time, talent, and money. Go for it. (and DON"T USE CAPS if you are not shouting:D )

Caps in my book are used for emphasis. Hehe. And you did interpret my question right. Maybe it's just not clear in my head yet what I mean. lol
