99 2wd tahoe slip yoke issues
I have a 99 2 door 2wd Tahoe that is starting to have some issues again with the slip yoke. I have a friend at the local dealer ship who has taken it apart 2 times and greased it up to stop the clunking noise from a dead start and at slowing down that fixed it. The first time was about 6 months after I bought the Tahoe and about a year later it started again and he took it apart and greased it agin a second time. It has been about 5 years since the last time he did it and its starting again. I have been reading different forums via the google search and now see that many are replacing the slip yoke with a new nickel plated slip yoke and it has solved the problem. I think it might be a dealer only part as i try to look one up online and cant find one that states it is nickle plated.
My question is, why would a nickel plated one fix this? Is it because the grease stays on that type of coating and stays on the part better thus reducing it drying up? And if any of you have replaced yours with the nickle one, where did you get it and whats the cost? I am going to try and contact my friend in the morning and hope he still works there. |
Re: 99 2wd tahoe slip yoke issues
The Nickel plated slip yoke is a band-aid fix for 4WD/AWD trucks only. And NOT always effective.
I know 2WD trucks have this issue also, But according to GM they dont. My 2WD '06 had/has this issue. Keep greasing it, Dont spend money on something that may not work. I use this with great results http://www.summitracing.com/parts/NA...7121/?rtype=10 |
Re: 99 2wd tahoe slip yoke issues
Yeah Cline, I keep thinking about just re-greaseing it. I am gonna try later this morning to get a hold of my friend, been about 5 years since we last talked. I dont have his cell number he changed it, but i still have his work number and extension so i will see what he says. He has been there working forever, like 25 years so he will be able to tell me if the new slip yoke is the way to go. I read on another post that GM has a grease that is made exactly for this issue, GM PART # 12345879 and it really holds up and works. I will ask him about that as well. Will keep you posted.

Well I talked to my friend who still works at the chevy dealership, and he talked with the tranny guy there and he said the same as you did. To re-grease it. Seems that is what most are doing for this.
