I finally got the truck running this weekend after the p/o had it sit for 5 years. On the test drive I noticed the transmission seemed to be acting funny. The transmission felt like it was switching gears more than I thought it should OD would kick in around 30 MPH. My question is do you think dropping the pan and replacing the filter would help? The fluid has some wear on it but it is not burnt. but there were some particals in the fluid on the stick when I checked it. Do you think this may be some corrosion from sitting? Or should I start looking for a core to rebuild?

That's not a good sign but before making any conclusion, drop the pan, change the filter and top it off with some new tranny fluid. Also make sure the TV cable is adjusted properly. There should be no slack in the TV cable when the throttle is at full throttle position.

I would find a core and do a full rebuild man, if you are going to be driving this truck on the regualr, the peace of mind is deffinatly worth it. I was in the same situation with my 75 c10, super low mileage 350 that had been sitting a while, figured it only had 55,000 on it so I changed the fluid, filter and vacuum module and thought I was good to go, put 2,000 miles on it no problem then on my way to utah it started slipping something fierce, So I got online, checked angies list and yelp then pulled the tranny and got it fully rebuilt by a reputable shop with a warranty for 750, since then I have drivin the truck over 3,000 miles with no problems!! You defiantly will not regret it. That being said if you have the money go for it! Maybe look into getting a th400 core and rebuilding that instead? I have heard great things about them.

The tv cable is adjusted properly I did that when I changed the carb over the weekend. I really don't have a grand to sink into the transmission. I am just hoping a transmission guru was on here and could tell me what to do. The good thing is it isn't my daily driver. I have never rebuilt one but I figure I could learn. There are enough resources out there that it doesn't seem impossible. I

If the filter is clogged (usually from clutch material), it'll give those symptoms you described. If that's the case, a new filter might help but do keep in mind that it's at best a compromised transmission.

Yes you can rebuild these transmissions yourself. I would buy an 87 or newer core to rebuild. The rebuild kit will cost you less than $200. There are some special tools you might need but most you can do without or make your own tool. I highly recommend buying the step by step video and take copious amounts of pictures as you take it apart.

I think the TV cable is not adjusted properly. Go to bowtie overdrives website, they have some great TV cable setup instructions on there.

When adjusting the TV cable, adjust it a little too tight and back it off 1 click at a time until it's just right.

I have run into the TV cable issue before and completely toasted a transmission in the past. so on this rebuild I used this.

Yes, when it's too tight, it'll feel like it's stuck in gear and won't want to upshift until the rpm's are very high. When you adjust it, start by going too tight and slowly adjust it back.

Make sure the set screw didn't slip on the cable if you used whats in the the picture.
Best way to adjust is by line pressure, but then you need a pressure gauge.

There is a guy on Craigslist in Franklin, Tn that builds them with hd internals and a new converter and sells them for $650 or $600 with a core. 6 months/6000 mile warranty. As soon as I sell the TH350 in mine I am going to get one from him.
