Is it cheaper to restore or buy restored?
 

How's it going? I'm new to this site and I have a 64 Chevy C20, longbed big back window in pretty decent shape. It runs good and verry little rust and a strait body. Would it be cheaper to restore it or sell it and buy a restored one? Im not looking to put alot of money in the engine just use the stock 283 that runs if I start this project.

How much did you spend so far on your project and do you have pics?

It's probably cheaper to buy a restored one than paying someone to restore it for you. Doing the work yourself changes the equation though. Plus I'd rather work myself into a nice ride than buy my way in.

If you restore it yourself at least you know what you have. Otherwise you could end up with someone's bondoed hack job.

If there is little to no body work othe then sanding painting and doing the inside of the cab how much will I be in?

Also is a 64 c20 big back window a nice truck to do?

See I have a guy who will sell me his 64 c10 longbed small back window for parts. It comes with an engine and trany. He has $1600.00 in new parts that are still in the box such as; chrome bumpers, grille, Oak wood kit the stainless steel strips for the wood kit, battery tray new tail light kit, the chrome parts to hold new carpet down, headlights, headlight housing unit and all the weathering ruber for the doors windows ect.

I dont need the truck other then take the better parts from. I talked him down to $1000.00

is that a good deal? His truck is missing 1 door. Im just trying to figure if my truck is worth the restore!

^^^sounds like a deal. I would restore myself. You could save some $ either way. Do some research on prices. Besides, you'll drive your project with a bigger smile, knuckle busting really pays off.

Looks like a nice truck, plus it has the big back window. I would fix it myself and you could do it pretty cheap.

Oh yeah! You can fix it yourself like others have said, but what no one has said so far is that it's EASY. Really. This site is like having 20 mechanics that are looking over your shoulder.

I'd start a build thread and get to tinkering :)

YOu might want to use the C10 frame and stuff if you are making a driver out of it instead of a work truck. The c10 is lighter and might get better gas milage and the ride should be better then a c20 Just a thought. I have a c 20 that I am going to do that with when I get some time again.

Buy the other truck for more than just the new parts, you will have no trouble parting out the rest of it as well. Take what you need from it first and grab extras like the good fenders and bumpers and other things that could need replacing down the road...Here in WA rust is a problem so having extra parts is a plus.

Good to see another guy from WA on here!! If you plan on restoring the truck yourself, then there are ways to save money, especially if you don't need to do a lot of body work. Getting $1600 worth of parts AND a truck for $1000 is a deal I wouldn't be able to refuse. If you don't end up getting it, send me his number!! :-P If you do get it, hit me up and I might buy some body parts off you!! :-)

So did you end up getting it? I live in Seattle but have my 64' project in Yakima... Maybe we can bounce some ideas off of each other. I am building mine with a tight budget.

They're everywhere Bobby. Just keep an eye on craigslist and knock on doors if you see one somewhere. People generally will tell you if theirs is for sale if they have one that's been sitting for a while. Ya just gotta ask.

Also I'd try Nashville too. It's not too far from you. Keep lookin and it'll happen :)

there is a 1966 swb step side down the street from me its been sitting there for a few years ive asked if he would like to sell about a year ago but he didnt want sell it .im going to ask him again today. haha

how muc are you going to gain by changing to a C10 frame besides a lot of work
