X-fer case help
 

Ok so I'm buying a new truck it's a 79 short bed with a 400 and th350 I didn't pay too close attention to the x-fer case. I know it's either a 203 or 205 I remember it has manual lock hubs does that mean its gunna be a 205 ? Or not ? I will find out for sure Saturday when I get it to work and put it in the air but what's the up side and down side of each ?

from the factory in 79 a 205 behind an automatic wasn't an option in anything but a 1 ton. And that was still only with a th400. Its very possible that someone put one in there between 79 and now, but its most likely a 203 with a part time kit. The downside of the 203 is it is chain driven, and the chains do wear out. The 203 is heavy as $hit, buts thats only an issue if you have to take it out. With the proper oil in a 203 it can last along time. Mine has been in fulltime mode for 270,000 miles. The upside is that when you put a part time kit in those you have a 2lo gear. Ups of the 205 is they are pretty indestructible and will probably out live your truck. Smaller size and better fuel economy with part time 4 wheel drive. If you're just using this as a daily driver I would just leave the 203 in there.

Oiling is often a downside with a 203. When converted to part time they do not spin, these cases have an internal pump that lubes the a$$ end, when converted to partime, the case does not spin and thus no oiling. Also another fatal error in 203 ownership is using gear oil in them. They use lighter oil, most common is 30w. In cold climates I would run 10-30.

To over come the part time oiling issue an easy $5 fix that does work is extend the filler hole 2 inches with a small nipple, 90 degree elbow and a 2" nipple, then cap it. This in essence lets you fill the case with 2 inches more oil and there will be enough oil and slosh to lube the whole case.

203's are a tough case, for regular 4wd use they are just fine. If you plan crawlin, boggin you can beef them up but are better off with a 205.

Ok thanks guys looks like its a 203 wih part time kit ill post pics of te truck on Saturday thank you guys
