Step side, Fleet side, or by the vin?

So my truck dosen't have a bed on it, nor do I have one for it. Now the question is what bed to get? My vin codes out to a step side. I like the step sides but hate the way the fenders body lines don't match the cab at all. So maybe custom rear fenders or different yrar fenders? So maybe the awnser is a fleet side? What do you think?

You asked which one: but not (1)do we prefer or (2)are you allowed to install or(3)whatever. Here is one answer: You MAY put any bed on it you wish, as your vin is in the cab--not on the bed, many which may have been changed since the trucks first left the factory, and just like original tires, you are allowed to change them.

Sorry I should have been more clear. Basically does keeping the truck "true" to the vin out weigh the personal preference to one bed style or the other. I do understand either bed can be installed on a frame. Hell I could put a Toyota Tacoma bed on my frame if I wanted to but thats just ridicilous.

I say put whichever bed you can find thats is good shape and at a good price. I love em both started off only liking fleetsides but now i really need a stepper to keep my fleetside company,

stepsides are easier to find because anything frm 55 -66 are the same. you didn't say if it is short or long bed but i asume that it is probably short? good luck finding a good shortbed fleetside bed that you can buy for less than your whole truck is worth

Yes mine is a short bed. My friend is holding a fleetside for me if I decide to go that route. 300 with a tailgate. Its in near perfect shape. There not extremley hard to find locally, they pop up every so often on CL. And they can be found in "some old guys barns" in the foothills.

I've always preferred fleetsides.

Hi Mike-----you will be pleased with the cruiser route (a change for you) not being a 4x4. plus you won't beat it up. If you have a near perfect s/fleet bed grab it. most are beat that i have found. looking forward to your build. working on my 61 little by little------have fun-----kimble

If I could find a near mint short fleet bed for $300 I'd be all over it! I've been looking for 2 years for one locally and no luck.

None or the vin decoders I have seen indicate step vs fleet bed designation. Perhaps you can enlighten me. There is a code on the spid but I forget the details off the top of my head.

Mine is a stepside and this is the second stepside I had. I think they were cheaper so that is why there are so many. If I had a choice I think I would go with the fleet side. I think it overall looks better and if you have a complete one for $300 I would do it!

Re: Step side, Fleet side, or by the vin?

Get an extra step side bed
Remove the fenders
Widen the bed about a foot or 18 inches
Remove 6 to 9 inches from each fender and re-attach them

You might have to tub the bed for wheel clearance.

Re: Step side, Fleet side, or by the vin?

Buy both a fleetside and stepside bed for it.
Make a trailor out of one.
Now you can go either route anytime your taste changes.
