Axle shafts won't go in the last 4"
I changed the front and rear axles on my 72 (it has a 69 frame and had drums all around). I had the spring perches moved (new axles are 1977) on the rear and it's all going back together nicely with new brakes etc. So now I can't get the axle shafts to go in the last 4 inches. I took the inspection cover off but I have no clue.
This is probably a simple fix, but I tried a search here and found nothing. Any help would be greatly appreciated. |
Re: Axle shafts won't go in the last 4"
If the axles came out of that housing, they should go back in... any chance the splines simply aren't lined up?
If they are different axles, are they longer than the ones that came with the housing? Or are the splines different, or larger diameter? Are both axles not going in all the way? If one is, maybe the axles are different length (right to left) and they are reversed. All just guesses, hope you find the problem. |
Re: Axle shafts won't go in the last 4"
Hey, Thanks Stocker, I went back out to the barn and tried again. Both went right in.
I just wasn't sure if transporting the rear housing without the axle shafts in might have messed up the alignment and I didn't want to force it. Turned out all I needed to do was wiggle and tilt the shafts gently and they slid right in. Thanks for the reply, I do appreciate it. |

Glad it worked out! Sometimes the best fix is to walk away for a bit, then try again.
