Running board mount help needed
 

Hi chaps
New here so be gentle ,I am building a frame for a 48 chevy truck and I am in need of a bit of help please . I could do with a few measurements of the running board mounts can you help

center of rear wheel to 1st beacket is 25 inches 2nd bracket is 52 inches 3rd bracket is 82 1/2 inches all the beackets are different

From the tip to the radius is 6.5 inches on top, where the board mounts.
I think for the width you will need to have somebody measure the overall width. tip to tip then do some math. I cant help on that now mine is apart and the the hangers need to be straightened.

You'll probably just want to wait until you have your cab and bed on and mock up the boards and then measure the mounts. The reason I say that is AD frames are shaped like an "A" (narrower in front than back) and your frame looks to be straight, so unless you're lucky and good at geometry stock measurements of the running board brackets won't do you a lot of good.

Frame looks good by the way!

I copied my frame from a GM PLAN (see pic) hope it's the right one
It shows that the frame is straight ?
Still because mine is custom I can't see any issues
I guess if I had the tip to tip measurement like mknittle (thanks fella) said that's me sorted
Just work from the center line

I don't think that's for an AD truck... It should be "A" framed if it's a 1/2 ton and I see 4 body mounts there, and AD's had shackle mounts on the rear of the cab. Somebody here probably has a similar diagram for an AD.

My guess is that diagram is for a task force truck.

I don't think I'd start over if I were you. There isn't anything wrong with having parallel frame rails, and you aren't any worse off than those of us who've done frame swaps for another vehicle. Obviously you aren't going for original so mount the cab, then mount the bed, and then hold the running boards up with adjustable jacks and then just fabricate the mounts out of 1x2 rectangle tube. Both the AD and the TF frames are relatively flat, and you've already got that covered.

I truth is my truck is on the high seas as we speak (due next month)and I was trying to get a head start on it

As you have already figured out that isn't going to work right under an AD GM truck but I think you should be able to save it. My question is why build your own frame when the truck should have a stock frame you can install your front end on and modify the rear like you did on that frame?

You should be able to cut the welds from the front crossmember loose and go back at least to where you welded the two tubes together and make a pie cut in the top rails and bring them in so that they are the correct width for an AD frame.

The 3/4 ton frames taper back under the cab and then run straight back from there unlike the 1/2 ton frames that taper front to rear.

This is a link to the 47/54 Chevrolet truck assembly manual that many of use to figure out measurements and how things fit together. There are a number of sources for it including some on a CD/DVD that would save shipping and time for you. It has every size of AD truck in it so you have to sort though it but it will save many hours of trying to figure things out.

I'd also suggest getting a factory service manual for your model of truck. Even if you change a lot of things there is a lot of information such as adjusting doors and adjusting the hood and fenders that really help.

Could you just tell me from your copy the frame width at its maximum just to put my mind at rest,I will get a copy on order
Just another point if I leave it as it is what will it foul if anything
I am also fitting a ls1 so this might help my case?

I could be wrong, but I can't remember anyone who's done a frame swap (which is basically what you've done) that's used stock running board brackets. They just never work out. Like BlueJeep said, mount the cab, set the bed on and figure where your running boards need to be, then fab brackets. Be sure to mock up your running boards before you permanently mount your bed so you have wiggle room.

Very nice Frame . I built running boards for a 55 (5100 LCF) - about 10 years ago , I mounted the box, Then set the running boards and fenders so they looked right. Remember that a LCF is big so I could just get on my knees and look at it .I used floor jacks , and never used a tape measure until I got ready to make the running board mounts- which I made out of 2 X 2 heavy wall tubing. It looked like some one ran a 55 2nd series into a wall at about 100MPH. It was my tow truck for 10 years - its in Selmer Tn right now and I wish I had it back - oh well he does drive it a lot at least its getting used.

Remember the running boards are attached to the rear fender only, so the mounting of the bed and rear tire is critical.
I would wait until you have it in front of you or a light tack weld, or a slotted bracket on the frame!
I do like the idea of Jag front and rear ON A STOCK CHASSIS!!

Here is a shot of my long wheelbase 1/2 ton frame. it's 9-1/4 inches longer than a short wheelbase frame but it is still the same width at the front and rear as the short bed frame.

That is right where the axle goes under the frame and it measures 28 inches at that spot.
This is a one ton frame I posted for someone else a couple of days ago but the side to side measurements are the same back to where the rails straighten out and run parallel.

It's too long out in front of the front crossmember for a 1/2 ton though so that measurement from the axle to the front of the frame is wrong as a 1/2 ton won't have the extra extension legs you see drawn on the front of the frame rails in the drawing.

This is full length drawing of the 1 ton frame. The only thing you are interested in is where the taper of the frame stops and straightens out. I'd say around where the rear trans mount goes should work fine.
