01 Chevy Express 1500 5.7 Vortec (white smoke/ Just rebuilt)
Just like the title says... I had a blown head gasket
I just rebuilt my engine from the heads up... Had the block checked and flush out... All gaskets and seals from heads up are new... Runs great,,, BUT,,, There is a lot of white smoke coming out of the tail pipe and it seems that the thermostat (new) isn't opening and the engine starts to get hot... I wont let it get to the red line... I am stumped... Any suggestions would be nice... Thanx, Sinman |

Have you bled all the air from the cooling system? And as for the smoke from the exhaust, you may need to drive it and burn the stuff in the converter and muffler out. I just did a HG on an Nissan and it smoked for like 20 miles as the exhaust was full of coolant.

Thanks for the reply...
I am trying to do all of the preliminary test before I take it on the road... The thermostat is not opening and it seems that I cant just take out the thermostat and run the engine with out it, like we did back in the day... It looks like the gasket is part of the thermostat. I do have it installed the correct direction, so my guess would be to get yet another new thermostat... I didnt think about old coolant in and on the exhaust so I will take that into consideration... It does seem to get thicker as the engine warms up... Does that mean anything or should I wait to see if it is just run-off burning? Thanks, Sinman115 |

If you have an air pocket in the cooling system the thermostat won't open.
