shipping a transmission
 

I've been reading so much here about shipping, my head's spinning!

Can anyone offer up opinions on the best way to ship a 3 speed standard trans from Denver or Ft. Collins CO to Hartford CT / Springfield MA area? My son has
an early OD that I could use here. He can crate it up and drop it off, and I can use a business address for the drop, or pick it up at a terminal. I'm not sure of the weight, but I'd guess probably over 100lb, under 150lbs. Thanks for any help!

A few recommendations. If it is an overdrive 3 speed, I would remove the governor and solenoid from the tranny before shipment. When I shipped mine via UPS, they coveniently broke the governor by dropping the tranny on that side. Both of those parts protrude from the tranny and are difficult to replace if they are broken. You have to be careful on the weight for UPS. My seller crated, then found it was too heavy for UPS. He then boxed it to make the weight. When I tried to make a claim against UPS, they said it wasn't adequately packaged and denied coverage under the shipping insurance.

Good luck with shipment. Needless to say, I wouldn't recommend UPS.

Check with the bus lines. they are inexpensive for bulky items.....and fedx ground is less expensive than UPS in my experience.

slorio, thanks for the tips. My son's a carpenter, so I think he'll be able to crate it up to be very secure.

kieth, thanks. I think Greyhound has a 100# max. No doubt, in a wooden crate, this will be more than that. I'm hoping someone can recommend a good freight shipper so the weight isn't an issue.

I just bought a a883 transmission off ebay. The seller shipped with fedex ground and put it all in 2 seperate boxes. bellhousing/shifter/linkages/clutch kit in one and then the actual trans in another. it was about 150 for both boxes.

He just wrapped it up in bubble wrap a few times, then taped it up in a cardboard box. I would recommend putting a big tin can (large can of heinz beans) over the input shaft as a last resort if it gets dropped.

Ship it in an old Igloo Cooler. I have done that before and it works great.
