Favorite muffler
 

Anyone have a favorite muffler?
Something with a nice low note.

I have always used Dynomax Super Turbos. Come is 12" to 22" lengths, longer=quieter. Chevelle has 18", nice rumble but not to loud. I got 22" for the truck to keep it quiet, had 12" before and it drove me nuts because it dumped under the cab and the reverberation was real bad. At an idle I could set off car alarms in parking lots.

Glass packs on my 59
Flowmaster 40 on my 78 gmc & travelall
Might do magna flows or spintechs on my dually.

I like the cackle of the glasspacks the best. But the flowmaster/magnaflow type mufflers do have thier place. The flowmasters dont bother me on my 78 GMC. But the Travelall with the big block+ flowmasters, it gets old really quick.

I had a pair of "Sweet Talkin" Purple Hornies on my T bucket that got a lot of compliments for their sound.
I had a pair of 26 inch 2-1/4 "blue" glass packs on my 51 Merc that I had a 350R Olds engine in that sounded great. Just enough rumble at an idle to let people know you had some power and enough sound going down the highway to get a thumbs up from other car guys and get the gals attention without annoying them. I became a car freak in the late 50's and early 60's when your car had to have "that" sound and not just be loud.
I can't knock the turbos though as my 71 has a pair of what are probably muffler shop turbos that a guy gave me that sound great and have a low rumble but sound good when you run down the road and aren't annoying to the people in the car or out of it.

Porters aren't cheap compared to a lot of others but the longer ones do have a deep sound. http://www.portermufflers.com/ They are steel packs.

The old Walker Continentals glass packs from Walker Mufflers also sound pretty good when you can find them.

Used to be a Flowmaster guy, but have switched to Magnaflow on the last few cars and trucks.

Smithys look interesting also.
I don't know what i will do yet. I have a 250 that is supposed to run good. Luck would have it that it is an older one:two: with the bolt on manifolds.
So langdons or cliffords and duals. I haven't decided weather to run the tubes on one side or cross over to the passanger side with one.

Those porters look well made for sure! "That sound" these days around here sounds like sombody farting in a coffee can. My wife can't understand why that irritates me!:devil:

Thanks for all of your thoughts on mufflers.
Another question: I do not have room over the top of the rear end. What is your thoughts of dumping the exhaust down or out the side in front of the rear tire?

Nice ride! My thinkining is it the truck isnt too loud and the tips fit the build style do it. :metal:

I personally really like that look of the exhaust dumped out the side, if you do it right. Which means cutting a hole in the side of the bed....

I used to have mine exiting just in front of the rear tires. Now it's straight back down the middle and dumps just before the axle angled at the ground. I like the way it is now much better. Never liked the look of the exhaust tips on the side of the truck

Magnaflows on my 454 powered C-10
Thrush glasspacks on my 307 powered 50
Flowmaster 50 series on my 383 powered S-10

The Flowmasters are much louder than they used to be, swapping to Magnaflows this weekend. The Magnaflows will be less offensive to my neighbors early in the morning. Note: My neighbor's haven't complained, I want to keep it that way.

My favorite of the 3 listed above are the Thrush glasspacks.

My 57 is a step side so the bed is different, but, just for conversation sake I ran mine out in front of the rear wheel. These long oval stainless tips helped me make the decision.

My 55 1st has slowmasters and the 53 has magnaflow with the same engine and they both sound a lot different.

I did have two different sets of muffs on the 53 until I liked the sound ( trying to get rid of the RAP) . I did not like the dynamax, too much rap, so I settled on the mags.
I did notice that the tips make a big difference on the sound and that a "X" pipe made the biggest difference in the final sound and removed a lot of the rep!
