Tripod Mirror Mounting Help Please
I am getting ready to mount my tripod mirrors back on the truck. I would appreciate mounting suggestions from those who have.... I am going to use the mirrors that came off the truck but am not sure if 1/4 SS bolts and nuts on the back side are the best way to go. That is what came off.
I did a search and found the "nutzert" suggestions but I'd have to use smaller bolts and don't know if that will hold the mirrors securely. I also looked in the factory assembly manual but couldn't find the mirror section. Should I use insulators, seals, silicon, that kind of thing to keep water and goo out of the truck? As the truck and I live in AZ I don't know how the rubbers will hold up in our heat. Thanks in advance for pointing out the obvious. |

I just installed a set of tripod mirrors on my truck about a month ago. I used 1/4-20 rain tite jacknuts with stainless steel bolts and it seems to work fine.

do they seal the opening also? I have at least located the website and know what to look for at Home Depot.

The tripod and the camper mirrors mounted up head out on the attachment bolts. The heavier west coast sr. mirrors were the reverse with acorn nuts on the outside. Either way I would use a fender washer on the inside bedded with something like "Right Stuff" against the door skin. Had hoped the parts manual my be of help but not much as you can see.

Thanks Tim. I do see a washer of some sort between the mirror support and the door. That is what I was looking for. NOW to find a washer that won't crumble in AZ heat, mar the door or shrink in 6 months.

You might just try stopping by the dealer and seeing what they list for the later trucks. This tripod type and the campers were used for about twenty years or so.

I'm planning on nylon washers (albeit much smaller ones) at the three points where the mirror mounts meet the paint on the door. I'm going to use jacknuts. I found that Chevy had used these along with some very nice stainless bolts on a 79 (possibly 77 or 78) Chevy van I found in the junkyard. I checked with my local dealer and GM still sells the parts. What's really nice is that the exposed portion of the jacknuts is vinyl coated and the bolts, in addition to being stainless have a small nylon washer so everything is protected from damage and the door is sealed. NAPA sells the jacknuts also as part # 665-1059 ( http://www.napaonline.com/Catalog/Re...Dp%3d3%26N%3d0). As stated above, I also believe the bolts can be purchased from GM if you like them.
Here are some pictures of the parts. These do require larger holes in the doors, and this is not original. Incidently, my 69 came from the factory with sheet metal screw/bolts, which did pull out, and nothing between the mirror leg and the door. I believe later models may have switched to bolts. |
