Question about Carb Install
 

I'm installing my new(er) carb tonight and am curious about something. Do you guys just crank it a couple times for the fuel to fill the bowls or do you use something else to prime with?

Crank it.

If you are firing the engine for the first time, then fill the float bowls with a small funnel designed for the job (I use a small syringe). If not then crank it.....LOL

I always keep a spray bottle around for that function. Using a spray bottle will control how much you spray in.:bowtie: :D jay

I would have to go with the flow on this one and say crank it!

Seems to me that cranking would get the oil flowing better before it fires up.

There is virtually no oil flow until an engine fires up.

I would have to disagree with that . I have always been taught to pull the coil wire and crank the motor a few revs to get the oil to the top of the motor. In a new motor I always use a rod to pump up the oil before ever turning it over.

hell i maybe wrong here, but try putting a small about of fuel into the carb, then start it. it might help get the fuel in there quicker.

Thanks guys. The carb install was done on Friday. All is well. :D I just cranked it in short bursts. Didn't take too long.

The biggest thing you have to look out for when cranking a dry carb is this. If you have rebuilt the carb, did you put some lube on the accelerator pump seal?

The odds of this happening are sometimes small, but I have had it happen where I did a dry start, pumped the gas pedal a few times while cranking, and I ripped the seal on the accelerator pump. Just a caution.

On a Quad you can pour fuel down the pipe on top which will fill the bowl for you. When I do a rebuild, I like to put fuel in the bowl before I assemble the air horn.
