Edelbrock 454 T.B.I. Intake fitment issues?
 

I picked up an Edelbrock 3764 Intake manifold from a Craigslister the other day. Got home, set in on the block and didn't pay much attention to it until tonight. It seems like it doesn't cover all the passageways on the heads. There's two exposed voids (that don't seem to go anywhere) that are not covered by the flange. Is this normal?

Engine is a TBI 454 from a '90 Suburban.

Yes, that is a problem I hate to say. Your heads have an exhaust cross over whereas the intake does not. The intake will bolt on and the truck will run alright but you will never get the exhaust leak to stop. I believe the Gen V big blocks from 1992 to 1995 did not use exhaust crossovers. That said, it looks like the intake is for a newer TBI BB (~92-95). The other possibility is your heads are older than you think.

This is like deja poo to me as I seen this poop before. I went through a similar mess doing a MPFI conversion and ended up swapping on non-exhaust cross over L29 Vortec heads to work with the non-exhaust crossover intake.

The heads on your truck are like the one on the left but your intake is for the one in the middle. Pay no attention to the gray texts boxes as they are not 100% accurate.

Your fine that part is exposed on most intakes and tha gaskets. My friends is the same. It's just a bbc oddity

As long as all it uncovers is the area around the exhaust crossover, you'll be fine. If it uncovers the crossover (the center hole), you'll have an exhaust leak. Might want to make sure you get a gasket that covers it rather than leaving it open - maybe a Gen 6 intake gasket?

Yeah, what the guys said above does make sense. The reason my project would not seal the exhaust leak at the intake was because the intake I was using required the later design plastic intake gaskets. The plastic gasket does not seal the exhaust crossover because it wasn’t designed for it. I agree, you should be good to go with a nice set of period correct intake gaskets.

This is the intake that was not compatible with exhaust cross over heads.

He didn't. He bought an Edelbrock Perf TBI intake for a TBI equipped 454.

My number matching, all orginal 7.4L block & peanut-port heads are the same way. I used some GM gaskets, but there were some similar gaskets included in my rebuild kit.

Sorry to bring an old thread back from the dead, but I am researching the same issue here. Have a stock 454 that needs to have the intake manifold gaskets replaced (part of the driver's side gasket is missing and I can see into the cylinder head crossover port).
When I do this, I was thinking of updating to the Edelbrock perfomer intake at the same time. My question is this: what gaskets to use that will seal up the port, and is that a good idea?
