The last yr of the original style 5.7 SBC 98--or 99

In its last incarnation, I thought it was 98,, someone elsewhere says hes working on a 3/4 ton with the last yr--99 WUWT?

A 3/4 ton in 99 would have been the same body style as the 88-98 half tons. They hadn't yet redesigned the heavy duty's.

non vortec (TBI) would be 87-95... 96-01 would be vortec 4.3,5.7,7.4 (some discussion that earlier 4.3's were ture vortecs, not just a marketing ploy) etc... 99-up LS Series engine 5.3,6.0, 8.1...

Always subject to debate because GM overlaps production between new and old, that what happens when they hired a Tord(ed) engineer.

If it was the newer LS based vortec I think it would be a 5.3 L or a 6.0L in the escalade. 2000 was the last year for the sbc 5.7 vortec in an escalade I think. I think the only thing that ever got a 5.7 LS type motor was a camaro/corvette/firebird/GTO

This would be correct. The last SBC installed in production vehicles were the Vortec 5.0L/5.7L, up to 2002 Express vans. Obviously you can still buy any style of SBC brand new from GM.

The Vortec 5.7 is not to be confused with the 5.7L LS1, which is a completely different design.

The 8.1L is not an "LS" (or more correctly gen III small block) but a big block engine that replaced the 454. I'm not familiar enough with BBC to know the differences between a vortec 454 and 8.1L though.

Nothing is the same unfortunately! they look similar and have somewhat similar dimensions to an old tall deck bbc but every parts is different enough they don't easily interchange!

Quote:

Generation I

The Vortec 5700 L31 is a V8 truck engine. Displacement is 5.7 L. It is the last production Generation I small-block from Chevrolet. The cylinder heads feature combustion chambers and intake ports very similar to those of the LT1 V8, but without the reverse-flow cooling. As such, the L31 head is compatible with all older small-blocks, and is a very popular upgrade. It offers the performance of more expensive heads, at a much lower cost. It does, however, require a specific intake manifold (a Vortec head has 8 bolts attaching the intake manifold as opposed to the traditional twelve bolts per head). The L31 was replaced by the 5.3 L 5300 LM7. The 2002 model year was the final year for the L31 5.7 L small block V-8 whose origins date back to 1955. The Vortec 5700 produces 255 hp (190 kW) to 350 hp (261 kW) at 4600 rpm and 330 lb·ft (447 N·m) to 350 lb·ft (475 N·m) of torque at 2800 rpm. It is currently being produced as a crate engine for marine applications and automotive hobbyists as the "ramjet 350" with minor modifications.

L31 applications:

1996–2003 Chevrolet Express/GMC Savana full-size vans
1996–1999 Chevrolet/GMC C/K full-size trucks
1996–1999 Chevrolet Suburban/GMC Suburban full-size long-wheelbase SUVs
1996–1999 Chevrolet Tahoe/GMC Yukon (and 2000 Tahoe Limited and 2000 Tahoe Z71 models) full-size short-wheelbase SUVs
1999–2000 Cadillac Escalade
