454 to 700r4?

I've got an 84 k10 that I am going to swap the 350 for a 454. The 700 r4 that's in it now works great. My question is will it hold up? The bb is going to be bone stock. Should just need a bb torque converter or...? What parts will I need for this swap?

Re: 454 to 700r4?

one of my buddies is a trans guy and what he said when i asked about putting a 700 behind my 454 is i had better build the living hell out of it or it would never live! btw hes been a tranny guy for more than 30 years, and my truck is a dually too so wieght i suppose would be a factor, my advice, 4l80

Re: 454 to 700r4?

I wouldn't. The 700R4 is not well-known for strength.

Ok I'll look around for 4l80e. Did they come in the 90s models trucks? Mine is also 4x4 so might be pricey. Are there any electrical components on them?

Re: 454 to 700r4?

So you want an electric 700r4? That's all your getting.

A stock 454 won't kill the trans. Add a boost valve from PATC and a transgo shift kit with a corvette servo and watch your 700r4 show how strong it is.

Run a cooler and keep your tv cable adjusted correct and no issues

not the same, the 80 is rated for 10000 pounds more than a 700
an electric 700 is the 4l60

Re: 454 to 700r4?

Sorry my bad misread it.

If he needs it for towing the yes go for the 4l80

Otherwise a 700r4 will be fine. If they can handl 750ftlbs of torque reliably then I'm sure they are good trans
If you want to talk about lemon transmissions the go ahead and look at the th200... Lol

Stock 454 in my truck with a 700r behind it, no issues at all, going on 4 years now.

Re: 454 to 700r4?

700r4 will need a bit of "freshening up" at your local trans shop, but can easily and cheaply built to handle your bbc.

Re: 454 to 700r4?

Like said have the trans built up for the 454 it will handle it fine.I have seen a 700r4 built up live 2 years and counting behide a 4bt Cummins which makes the torque of a big block.

Re: 454 to 700r4?

Yeah a stock 454 won't kill a stock 700r4 unless you're planning on towing with it or hot rodding the 454 some day. Once you upgrade something though you'll have a hard time with the weak parts like planetary, power band, output shaft. All of those should be upgraded if towing or building the engine are in your future. I went through 3 slightly built versions of the electric 700R4's (4L65e's in my case, same as the 700r4 and 4l60e but with a 5 gear planetary) in my Silverado SS. Of course that was trying to live behind a mildly built LQ9 with 3500 stall, awd, and no torque management in the ECU. I finally went with one built with 13 steel/friction disc, wider kevlar power band, upgraded input/output shafts, cryo hardened planetary gears, billet servo, etc and it finally held for more than a few thousand miles.

7004r4 isn't strong but if you do use it I would use it until it drops then have it rebuilt or replaced. I've personally would do a transgo kit boost valve vetted servo and a real good transcooler.

That's what I like to hear! I'm going to be running 35s but I will change gears out. Hopefully it will hold up...

Re: 454 to 700r4?

The biggest enemy of this trans and all transmissions is heat. Keep its temp low
The bands and clutches applys are week. A boost valve boosts line pressure for the clutches and a corvette helps the apply power on the band. EVEN the corvette servo is kinda week and should have been standard equipment

This is what my 454\700R4 has been towing for a long time. Get a good servo, clutches and cooler.

Biggest you can fit/afford!

I'm fond of stacked plate coolers, as opposed to tube and fin. They're supposed to be more efficient, but as the poster above stated, get the highest rated gvw you can afford and that fits.

Yah good people. I drilled them with questions on the phone for an hour and they shared so much with me. We bought the kit and had our gm trans guy build it and he called on a couple things and they helped him out. He liked the kit and we liked the results.

Re: 454 to 700r4?

I thought about trying to make a 700r work in my dually. For what it’s worth, I’d rather run a trans that I know will hold up (TH400) and drive/use the truck without worrying about it, than run a trans that may or may not hold up (700r), but always have that kernel of doubt in the back of my head.

But then again, I’m comparing a 1 ton to a 1/2 ton.
