72 Big block motor mount questions
I have a 72 with the 350 installed and will be swapping it out for a big block. I am thinking of just buying the 72 only big block stands and clamshells and new rubber motor mounts. Will this work ok? Also why are the big block stands different from the 67-71 and the 72 only? Are the frame holes different or something for the 72 year? Does the 72 only stand make the engine sit a little different in the engine bay than the 67-71 stands? I dont wanna use my small block stands because I have read they have header clearance problems. What are the benefits or any of using the 67-71 stands or the 72 only stand? Thanks

Re: 72 Big block motor mount questions
We used '74 454 mounts and stands in my '69 frame to give plenty of clearance for the headers and clutch linkage.
We did have to drill different holes in the frame and cradle so we would not have to move the transmission and not modify the driveshaft. |
Re: 72 Big block motor mount questions
If you can find them go with the 72 frame stands over the 68-71 stands. the mounts for the 72 are about 20 each but the 68-71 mounts are about 90 each iirc either stand should be a direct bolt in with no mods check the parts board I'm sure someone will have some for sale

Re: 72 Big block motor mount questions
The 72 BB stands use mounts with bolts running thorugh them horizontally like post 73 mounts, instead of the bolts mounting vertically like the 67-71 SB mounts. There was a recall back in the day and the dealers installed a cable to keep the engine in place in case of a broken mount, which could cause the throttle linkage to bind up, which I am sure you are aware, is not good if the throttle is at anything more than idle. Check out the FAQ section. One of the members has a mod that lets you use a cheaper 67-71 SB biscuit on the BB 68-71 towers.
