Replacing motor
 

Hey, been having lots of problems lately and I need a new motor. I was looking at this one

It has vortech heads and a roller cam. I know I'll need a new intake (which I need regardless of motor), and an electric fuel pump. Question is can I use my old style distributor? Will I need any other parts to make it work?

Pretty sure u can but u need to change to a bronze cam gear, someone correct me if im wrong.

So what kind of HP rating do these motors have on them.?

Might hqve to change the flexplate too if u have auto if going from two piece rear main to one

from what I can tell they are 255hp/330lbs motors.

This one is 290hp/326lbs

Not to get off track of the post, but I seen a few people recomend the lower HP motor over the higher hp motor (which is cheaper) and have to wonder why this is. There must be some info I am not seeing. I just thought the L31 would have more hp with the heads and cam it has in it.

And 9.4:1 compression ratio... 255hp sounds low...

I looked at that one also, but i have a one piece rear main seal now plus the other motor has a roller cam and vortech heads. What I've read online seems to say that with an intake and 4 barrel it would be in the 290-300hp range, I don't know how accurate that is though

It would make since that it would have more hp, vortech heads, roller cam and high compression. Just dont understand where they are getting these hp numbers..lol

I'm really interested to see how this works out if you get it. I've been looking at the 290 horse engine to replace my stock 305 down the road some.

Swap the roller cam and get more HP out of it. You'll will need an electric fuel pump. There is no provision for a fuel pump. If you want a mechanical fuel pump, you need to use another block.

It all depends, what do you want to do with the truck. In my case (86 K10 w/305) I went through the same dilemma and bottom line was that it was a truck and torque trumped HP and I went with the 350/260hp. While the numbers GM puts on these are up for debate, the old 350/260hp had more torque out of the gate than the 350/290hp or the 350/255hp roller.

Only real change needed was the flexplate and was very happy with the result (after all the while you are at it stuff of course).

Just swapped in a crate 350 (290HP) last year in my C20.

If you think its too weak and not enough Horsepower consider this. My setup, with an SM465 trans and 4.10 ratio rear dragged this around all last summer with ZERO problems pulling.

Some roller cams do have a fuel pump cam just know or ask which

Horsepower is nice but it's not my main concern. The truck is my daily driver and reliability is first priority, and I am no mechanic. Maybe it is dumb but I'm worried about getting the carb and timing set on the first startup without messing up the cam. I understand it that roller cams don't have to be broken in.

Yes get the melonized steel gear so that you dont have to change it out frequently like the bronze ones.
