colorbond interior paint
 

anyone use this? i have a 1987 gmc with charcoal interior and was wondering if anyone knew exactly what colorbond color i needed to paint some parts. i definitely don't just want it plain black, i want it to still be the factory charcoal color. thanks!

I'd search SEM Products, best quality interior paint out there, follow the instructions and it will look factory. Most automotive paint suppliers sell SEM products.

Ditto. If you are going to spend the time and money go SEM.

agreed! I just used SEM myself. I followed their instructions. Now it looks like it would have came from the factory. post #244 of my "crusader" build thread has a little more detail on the process and some photos

thanks for the replys! any idea on the durability on the SEM product? i have to do door panels and i am worried about it rubbing off in the summer if i put my arm on it for a while. thats why i thought the colorbond looked interesting because it supposedly becomes part of the surface or whatever. thanks!

I've not had any issues but keep in mind, you're "painting" a piece of plastic that is "molded" a different color.

If you do the prep and clean the part real good first it should stick for a long time.I have dyed pieces i kinda half way cleaned first it pealed off in months.A good soap then a grease and wax remover should be enough.

Prep clean. And when you think you've cleaned it enough, clean it again. Use a adhesion promotor before you spray the color and follow the color with the low luster clear. Here is my Camaro's interior when I got it.

Here it is after. Now I replaced the door panels and installed a dash cap but I had to paint the cap, arm rests, console, sterring wheel and lower dash. All SEM products cleaning, adhesion promotor and low luster clear.

I wanted to update this to say colorbond works as well as SEM. SEM is just marketed to body shops more. You can also buy custom mixed interior paint at any auto body supply store or buy adhesion promoters for most typical exterior paints (urethanes etc) to improve plastic adhesion but you would typically need a spray gun to use the last 2 options.
