How low can I go before I have to c-notch??
 

As soon as I get my tax return back, I'm planning on getting the Grand Slam kit from CPP. I have really liked the look of a 4/6 drop, but I'm not really crazy about having to do a c-notch in the rear just to have it. I can't find anything concrete as to what the max drop is before I have to. Thanks!!

BTW, it's a 1966 GMC Short Step on a '66 Chevy frame so I do have coils in the back.

Also, if anyone has any opinion on the CPP Grand Slam kit or anything comparable, it would be much appreciated. I chose it because it came with pretty much everything I need for a good price. However, if there is something else out there that is better, I would love to hear about it. Thanks again!!

I have all CPP parts on my 66 C10, drop spindles, lowered springs and shocks front and rear, c-notched with 2" blocks, tracking bar, power assist disc brakes. Rides like a dream! The only problem I had was the power assist brake booster. Worked great at first then the pedal went to the floor, sent it back, second one did the same thing. I couldn't fidgure it out so I took it to my mechanic and the only thing he could find was a broken copper washer. Re-mounted the booster and no problems since.

you will get a few different oppinions, but here is what I have found. You will need to notch it if you drop it 6 inches or lower.

I hope to leave the bed floor at original height and would love to avoid cutting my frame if possible but I figure mock it up and pull it down to it bottoms out on back snubbers and just go from there.

I went by the metal shop and grabbed some scraps just in case I do get into a notch since the 63-72 notch kits won't work on the older frames.

Most guys have been fine without a notch, and just use a small rubber bumper just in case.

Just get the bolt in notch from cpp. Easy to install and you gain close to 2 inches.

Here is my 1962 on rear bags. The ride hight is 11" to the bed in front of the tire. 295/45/18 a 28" tall tire. I will go lower after a notch and two piece drive shaft. This gives at least 3" of travel at 30psi. The other is 275/60/15 is a 27ish tall tire. The pipes makes it look lower. Original '60s add ons.

LVPhoto, I'm diggin' that stance!! I didn't know they had those exhaust pipes as an option!! I might be looking into that!!

With the bolt-in c-notch kit from CPP, do they tell you exactly where to cut and all that?? I'm just kind of scared to do something like that because I kinda only have the one frame if I screw it up... Lol. If it's super easy then I might consider it. I've done some metal work in high school and college but it's been a while...

And thanks Fla Grown for the feedback on the CPP parts. I'll keep an eye out for the faulty booster.

With some simple common sense you can put the notch exactly where it needs to be. BUT!!! I will warn you, if you do the notch and put those slim pancake style bumpstops in, you WILL come into contact with the wood floor at full drop. An easy remedy to this is just use a slightly taller stop. None of this is "hard" to do.

Another thing is, if you plan on hauling a trailer of ANY size, do NOT use a c-notch. The notch will significantly reduce the strength of the frame

Nah, I'm just building this to be a weekend cruiser. From the looks of this truck, it has worked hard enough in its lifetime. It's working days are done. :-)

Same here, mine is just a play toy now. If that is the case then I would suggest doing the notch.

After a little research, I've found that there is a dropped center trailing arm crossmember that improve the trailing arm angle for our lowered trucks. Does anyone have an opinion one way or another on that or should I save my money for something else?
