Funky smell!
 

I'm getting a funky burnt smell when my engine gets hot and when the A/C is on. When I turn off the A/C off, the smell goes away. I've change the plug wires (Taylor's) and plugs (Autolite Platnums) out about 2 weeks ago and I don't recall this happening before that. I checked the wires and there's no burn marks or melted areas. There not touching the exhaust or anything hot.

If it was a burnt wire, shouldn't I smell it even with the A/C off?
Maybe it's the A/C? Anyone know? Thanks.

Also, the smell is more pronounced at stoplights and such!

Check the belt...
I got this problem at my father's 1977 Caprice Classic , the compressor was completely blocked...

How can I tell if the compressor is turning good?

I have thought about the belts and it's been over 5 years since they've been changed. It does have a rubber smell.

you check the compressor by turning ont he AC and watchin it . Make sure he cluthc goes on and off in cycles it could be the clutch is siezed or something thats easilly replaced. Also check to see your AC belt is properly tight and on the pulleys correctly

Where exactly is the clutch? Is there a window on the compressor to look through or something.

I'm a little slow... I think I'll go look at it.. :D

the clutch is the part that the belt goes around --when off the center of the pully does not move --when ac is turned on the electric clutch will engage and the center part will turn

OK, I checked the clutch and it is engaging normally. I did notice that the belt was vibrating wildly when the compressor is on, but it is off, the belt pulls normally.

Could the compressor be going out or is it just the belts getting worn out? Visually, they look OK, but like I said they have been on the truck for 5+ years.

mine does the same thing.

but mine does it whenever the switchs are in different positions.

i attribute that to the controls being really old and dust covered inside and need of replacing.

if the belt is wobbling like crazy while the compressor is on i believe thats a sign of a bad bearing in there ( or one starting to go) may wanna check with some of the more experienced guys tho just make sure before ya go for a compressor that the belt is tight enough or isnt stretched beyond its limits

for future refrence, to avoid funy smells in your truck, leave your mother-in-law at home. do not take her anywhere in your truck. this will also help your springs to last a little bit longer. springs dont like alot of heavy weight like that. :d

She's never been in my truck! Honest!! :eek: lol
