Chevrolet/GMC Assembly Plants
 

According to the 6066GMCGuy http://www.6066gmcguy.org/VinNumber.htm , they built GMC trucks in the Fremont Assembly Plant in 1966 … therefore Chevrolets and GMCs were built in the same plant. Does anyone know if they were mixed together on the same line? I can see how they would basically build the same, but there were so many minor differences they may have had separate lines, maybe separate parts of the plant. I don’t know why this never occurred to me before.

I think the Pontiac West plant built both Chevrolet and GMC medium duty trucks as well as GMC light duty trucks. Are there other plants that were integrated ? :gmc2: :chevy:

I think they did, because on another post I saw some pics of the fremont plant, which also built the olds f85/442 ,the chevelle,the tempest, and the buick midsize there were shots of them coming down the line all mixed up there was a chevelle and right behind it was a buick...

My 62 Chevy has the L code for LA plant. Not listed under Chevy.

my 1965 gmc k1500 has a the vin letters "HPF" while all the other gmc trucks have a "PF" or a "ZF" in the middle of the vin number, i cant explain that, but if some one no's why they put the 3 letters in my vin , let me no, unless my truck was built in 2 plants.

I don't know if this is true or legend but when I worked at a Pontiac Gmc dealer in the late 70s, my boss told me that Chevys were built four days a week and GMCs the other day.

I knew a guy in high school (late 70's) that had a pickup that had a chevy badge on on side and a GMC on the other. Strange I remember that.

In 1960 my GMC was built in the Oakland plant. Not sure if or when that production may have moved to the Fremont plant (about 30 miles south of Oakland).

Sorry to be joining late but - yes - builds were integrated down the line.

During the squarebody years (supporting Flint, Oshawa, Pontiac East, Janesville, Fort Wayne, St Louis) roughly every 9th vehicle was a GMC. The balance were Chevy's.

K
