rims rims rims.....

well, i went into a local speed shop today to get some price quotes on some rims. i really want to go with the tourq' thrust II's. they would either be in a front:18/8 rear 18/10, or front 20/8 rear:20/10. i really want to go with the 20's but it will cost about 500 a rim. thats 2000 plus about 600 or 700 for tires. what do you think? and yes, they do make them in 20's. but its custom made....tell me what you think...or any other selections of rims...

ohh and by the way i want peoples faces to be like  when i roll by.

I think 20's are a little to big for these trucks unless you can tuck them. A 18 on the front and a 20 on the rear would be killer!! Gotta TUCK them though or it wont look right.

PHOENIX 06-13-2003 12:41 AM

I say get the 18's, they will look great.
Nothin' against 20's! But I would get the 18's

AirMale 06-13-2003 02:18 PM

I got 20's and they look better than my best friends 18 torque thrst II's. GET 20's!!! And where the hell do you get off thinking $600 or $700 for tires....try minimum of $800 plus lugs, nice stems and don't forget the install and hi-speed balance. Just do it right the first time and you won't have $2500 into wheels you don't like. I'd rather have $3k+ and not be able to stop starring at my wheels. Don't even think about gettin those Goodyear GT-II's--->get an aggressive tread pattern like Kumho or BFG. Just put it on the card-->Post some pics when ya get sorted out.

For my rim/tire setup. I paid $175 per rim (17x9½) and $90 per tire (255/55 17). I ALMOST did 18's, but the price difference vs look didn't warrant 18's. I think my rims look BEST in 17's (I've seen them in 18's and 20's...the spokes get too skinny imho.)

swervin ervin 06-13-2003 11:41 PM

Well, my opinion is, and maybe it's because I'm getting old, but I think on our trucks, anything over 17" is too much rim and not enough tire. It just looks funny to me, but too each his own.

Don't any of you guys with 20's get all hostile. I said looks funny to me, not you. If you like them, this is all that matters. You are not trying to please me anyway, right?? :D

Bitter Beard 06-14-2003 06:43 AM

I gotta agree with Ervin, but I'm an old crusty bastard myself so it all comes down to personal taste.

Is the ride affected at all with larger rims or is that just collateral damage and accepted?

SCOTI 06-14-2003 08:55 AM

Swervin, I agree with 'the too small of a tire' theory but IMO if you do the math & keep the sidewall height greater than say a 245/45 or @ least 4+" in height, it doesn't matter if it's a 17, 18, or a 20.

The wrong size tire for the wheel (too narrow/wide, too short) & too much gap between the tire & fenderwell do more to hurt the 'look' than wheels greater than 17" in diameter.

As for the GoodYr II's, sizing is more important than an aggressive tread pattern when it comes to a truck tire. My buddy Keith has them on his 01 sportside chevy w/a 4/6 drop & they ride good & look decent for their cost. If they offered more selections in size I would consider them if the price was still comparable.

He has the maroon single cab stepside right? Yeah his truck looks clean but the 99+ are one of the only trucks that can use that tire and make it look good. :D

Yep, thats the one.

C-10volvo 06-15-2003 01:16 AM

alright, ive but some thought in to it, and checked my bank account haha. and i think im gonna go with the 20's. i know thoes goodyears are trouble... but what are some other choices. i have about 3 to spend. 2 on rims, 1 on tires and all the rest. "AirMale" what do you think about backspacing? since they are custom i can do anything. i would like the edge of the rubber to be at my fender. im really tired of my really weak 235's sitting about 3 inches in!! i just cant wait to have them. now my rims on my 1964 volvo will match my truck haha.
thanks for all your comments, including the "old crusty bastard". hey im 16, i want 20's!!

You mean 20x8½ and 20x10...ahem, ahem.

Zorro_sn 06-15-2003 02:20 PM

yea i like the 18's

apstguy 06-15-2003 05:38 PM

I'm 17! I don't want bling-bling dubs on my truck! These are old trucks! I say the largest I would go is 18. I have 15s right now, but they could be bigger.

SCOTI 06-15-2003 05:55 PM

Once you swap 'em back & forth from 15's @ all 4 corners to 18's up front & 20's out back, they don't look quite so 'big'. When I put the 20's on the back of my 74 they actually look just right . . .... not to big, not to small. For me, a 245-40-20 is too short on the sidewall for the front when driven alot so I just went w/18's & a 45 series tire.
