Patching a sunroof

So just got my Jimmy for my project and one thing, it has a cheesy, ill fitting 70's sunroof in the top. You know the lip sticking up 3/4 of an inch above the top, been gooped up with RTV and caulk several times, blah blah blah...

Otherwise the top is in decent shape, solid hatch, a couple of inside load gouges, but not so bad. Is patching the sunroof hole and having it look like anything really a possibiliy? ...or is my best option to try and put a larger, better fitting unit in, or just look for a better top? Not that it matters but it looks like it's a double wall.

Also if I end up going the route of finding an uncut top, are the single wall and double wall hatches interchangable?

Re: Patching a sunroof

I never could understand why people put sunroofs in the top instead of just taking the top off. I had the same issue with mine and decided to have it filled with fiberglass. Check out my build thread. I found a guy that repaired my top and painted it.

Here is a link to a top in the classifieds. You could have him cut out a patch and have a fiberglass body man repair yours as long as its a single wall top.

Ahh yes the dreded sunroof. I had that on mine also. I have a single wall and wanted to get it patched. I went to pic n pul and cut a section from an 89 Blazer top ( and they gave it to me at no charge) and my friend who owns a body shop said it was an easy thing to do. Someone on here did the same with a double wall top by buying a section from a trashed double wall and used the for a patch. I was going to replace my top also but it was in great shape except for the vent. Glad I got it fixed because I havent seen a better one anywhere.
