To me unless you can get those to Bluetooth control a good system with amps and iPod interface and all the adjustability for speakers tone etc.. Also add xm radio or pandora

Otherwise in my opinion your still installing an antique in your car.

My Retro-Sound unit runs a thumb drive, external amp, aux input for XM radio and of course a tuner. The radio also has an aux input on the front to plug in my iPod.

First I have to repair the dash hack done to my truck. Someone here sold me an uncut piece to weld in, had it so long I forgot who. Retro Sound will fill the repaired spot. They look nice and have enough features for me.

I don't have pictures but here's what I did. (I also bought a dash piece but didn't use it)

I cut a flat piece of aluminum that fit over the dash bezel where the radio goes. The aluminum fits flush over that area and I painted it with wrinkle paint to match the bezel. The aluminum is secured to the bezel and dash with sheet metal screws in the factory location. The aluminum was carefully cut to accept the Retro radio, the radio bolts to the aluminum and a back strap secure the back of the radio. My second revision has the aluminum secured behind the bezel, 4 years no problems at all.

I don't have a problem at all with folks wanting a new style radio cd player in the dash of these trucks. Some of the installs look better than a factory jobs, others leave a lot to be desired. My issue personally has to do with my 56 year old eyes and seeing tiny buttons on the radio, especially when I should be looking at the road. The Retro unit offers me old school KNOBS and all the features I need. Plus a remote control if needed.

Mine's going to need a little surgery - the damage shows outside the bezel a little. Someone here had another good idea, to take the good piece and rivet it in over the DIN cut. I've got a new bezel already, just need to make the repair. But back to the Retro Sound, someone here posted a link to some bad reviews, it looks like they may have had some quality control problems at some point. But it looks good and has the features I want. I'm going to try one for sure.

The clock seems to have a mind of it's own. Another issue for example, I'll get out of the truck with the radio set to 106.9, get back in and it's 106.7. Not a big deal to me but may be bothersome to others. 95% of the time I listen to XM so the radio "wandering" doesn't bother me. I do like being able to set the start up volume, no matter how loud i was rocking when I turn off the truck, at the next start up the radio comes on to a soft low volume.

Bryan, I'd put up with that any day over forty little buttons that do God-knows-what. Seems like my fingers get fatter and my eyes get worse every year.

Re: "retro sound" for those of you that like the original look

All I need is a USB port to plug in my cheap $20 MP3 and I'm set with more than 600 songs to listen to. I don't use the fancier (more expensive) stuff like blue tooth, or Ipods, and I rarely ever listen to a radio station anymore.

Even with a cheap $99 radio that accepts a USB the sound quality has been just fine for me, but I never jumped onto the booming stereo bandwagon either, a pair of 6x9's work just fine.

Bruiser, I agree 100%. If there is one thing I can't stand on modern type radios it's all the crazy little buttons. As I get older they are harder to see, and fat fingers don't work well on them either ;) Not to mention they have so many in depth settings that any time you unhook your battery you spend the next 3 hours reading over the radio manual again to figure it all out

I really just prefer the simplicity of a basic knob style radio. I also like the factory head units in the GM cars with their BIG buttons that are easy to read, and it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out your setting when the battery is unhooked. Just reprogram your stations, set the time and your done ;) All your base/trebble settings are knob controled.
They make adapters for these factory GM head units to plug in your aftermarket devices like blue tooth/Ipod/MP3 as well for about $69, that's what I'm looking into as we speak, so I can keep that "EASY TO USE" factory head unit.

An Edison phonograph then you have class and classic sound

In all honesty I'm not one of this kids that fits the biggest subs and amp I can. But I do amp my speakers and prefer the ken wood excelon on series. Thier higher up models and many have no buttons. I like having my sound surround me and be clear and tuned perfect. I have a small motorcycle battery hooked up as a backup memory for my radio so it does not lose settings when the or if I yank the battery. Listening to Johnny cash in my truck and you swear he's next to you and the thump of bass that delivers depth that I like. Perfect to me.

My freind has the classic auto sound radio. We hate how bright and green and annoying the display is. As well as its hard to read through the faux tunning display on the front and like some have shown it wanders on stations and sometimes the station number and tuner don't match so its not modulated quite right likely. His has Bluetooth and USB both work fine. Bluetooth works decent but you can't be to far away. If your truck is loud you find the radio runs out of juice quick so it doesn't get to loud

In my opinion as I stated before, so you guys don't get mad and turn this into a yellowtrollit like post or hottoddlers forum post ; IMHO the product is still antiquated compared to today's stereos ESP for $400 it should be much better

LOL, It gets a little crazy at times on both of those sites.

I bought my radio for way less than 400 bucks, good thing, Mrs. S10Fan would have shot me over that. LOL

Yah any time I do a google search for stuff I get results from all the forums and those two always halfway through the thread turn into a hate fest bashing or argument. This forum from what I have seen is the most respectful mature one yet. It's why I stay. Everybody helps out and is calm about it

Let it be know as the original poster I will just buy a pioneer 80-prs with kick panels and a under the cab sub. The old look is not for me but those of us who do like it I just found a great compromise. It has has 3 rca, Bluetooth, and usb,

I must say I'm intrigued, what be the benifits of woofers outside and under the vehicle?

It will pass through under the passengers seat. Thinking about sealed for the quality, plus I can use a full sized speaker (stroke) and keep my seat as far back as possible I'm 6'1 and a big guy. Could pass through the bed but it will flex and be obvious.

Under floor sub boxes were used in some high end systems in the 90's. I was into the car audio scene way back then, wish I had some of that money back. LOL.
