5.3/4L60E 4wd Swap Questions

Ok, I've searched and read and searched and read, I've followed links, looked at build threads, read the pinned threads, PMed other members (thanks for the replies btw!) read sites like http://ls1tech.com and others for the last 3-4 weeks and gone in circles. With all the info out here the last thing I thought I needed to do was start a new thread, but he we go.

My plan is to do this to my 72 K5. I want to retain the original ride height and use the 4L60 w/the NP205. Also, I want to keep the original speedo, tach, oil pressure and amps gauges. My K5 has factory AC, and I want that to work too. I'm undecided on whether to retain the original power brake booster or switch to hydroboost. Any thoughts on that?

So, I decided that I should start looking for a donor engine/tranny to get started. This is where I have some questions.

-First and foremost, what is needed from the donor vehicle to make the swap successful? I know the complete wiring harness and PCM are needed. What else should I look for. I understand that if it's a DBW, I'll need the pedal and the TAC module. Am I forgetting anything here?

-Is there a better year than another when searching for a 5.3?

-When getting an engine from a salvage yard, or some other place where you can't hear it run, how do you determine if the engine is "good" by visual inspection alone?

These are the most basic questions, I know, but I want to make sure I have a good idea of where to start.

Thanks guys!

Sounds like you've done your homework....time to "dive in".

If you want a stock ride height you may have to move the engine back so that the pan has enough clearance from the axle differential. This would cause you to move the transfer case back and redo your drive lines....

You could pull the heads and oil pan to see the innards...or bolt it all together and fire it over. You could do a leak down test before hand or a compression test after you get it hooked up. It may be worth just hooking it up and seeing what you got.

My suggestion is this, before you buy your motor, make sure your ready for it, in other words, you have the time to devote to going through with the swap in the time the warranty period is. I didn't. I know that LS1nova makes or can help you with keeping your gauges so hit him up. make sure you get ALL the accessories from th donor ( best to buy the whole truck IMO). harness isn't real important if your not doing the electrical work anyway. I would get the motor that you can afford, the best one. most of the unwanted stuff (AFM and VATS et) can be modded out.

oh and we need pix, it isn't true unless you show pics dude!

My Jimmy had factory air and someday I plan on finishing the AC part of my swap.

I someday want to do the hydroboost but there is so much more to the swap that you should leave that for after the swap.

As far as what you should get, as much as you can. Engine, transmission, harness, PCM, pedal, tac, hoses, belts, assecories, starter, manifolds, section of exhaust with O2 sensors. These are the things that will nickel and dime you to death.

Some of the more reputable places to buy your engine will let you hear it run.

This is definately a "nickle and dime" you project.

There are a bunch of little things you need that the local stores don't have. Then, you have to order online, pay for shipping and wait a few days-week....painful.

Thanks for the feedback.

This is something I definitely want to do. I just want to plan it out the best I can before I start.

Hey guys, I just wanted to come back to this thread with a question.

I found a 2002 5.3 w/harness and sensors for $185. However, the guys selling says the oil pump went out and it has lost compression and needs rebuilding. He also said no crack heads or block. When an engine loses compression, is it because the rings are bad or what?

What do ya'll think?
