OK Guy's, I need to know,

1972 Cheyenne. Is it suppose to have the tail gate band and if so, is it wood grain or black?

I have the rest of the package, headliner, wood grain door panels, black exterior lower trim and tilt.

I believe the cheyenne would have lower woodgrain with a woodgrain tailgate band.

Let me clearify my original post.

My 1972 Cheyenne came from the factory with the Cheyenne package. It is ochre/white with black seat and headliner and door panels. Door panels have wood grain trim. Dash does not have wood grain. The truck has tilt wheel and A/C. It has the upper and lower moulding with the lower molding black. The tail gate has been replaced and has no band.

My question is:
Did Cheyennes come factory with the band?
If so, what was correct, black or wood grain.
My thought is black since the lower trim is black.
Is it possible to convert a wood grain one to a black one without to much effort?

A cheyenne should have a woodgrain tailgate band and your lower trim should be woodgrain also.

I'm not sure which one yours came with from the factory (SSTim could tell you for sure), but LMC does sell a black one that might go better with the rest of your moulding.

LMC is very proud of that piece accourding to what they ask for it. I am going after work to buy a tail gate that was a take off and has never seen weather. No rust or dents and it has not been ramed by something sliding in the bed. It has the wood grain band on it and all the hardware for $200.00. I will post some pics this weekend.

Sounds like a great deal. Also, there might be a chance that the wood grain could be a sticker over the top of black paint. Seems like the ones I've seen have been cracked and faded from the sun, and they seem black. So, if you really want black, you might be able to use a heat gun to get the wood grain off, and then hope it's good black paint underneath, or just paint it

Things are well here. The wife bought me a new dash pad from Brothers for valentines, that should be here next week, so I'll restore the paint in front of the windshield, and install it, and do a little how to thread on here

A Cheyenne would have woodgrain lower trim and a woodgrain T/G band. Wood door panel inserts, but not on the dash. Cheyenne supers had the wood on the dash. Lets see that new tailgate!

A Fleetside Cheyenne or Cheyenne Super will have the woodgrain tailgate band and woodgrain lower body molding. The upper belt molding is optional on a Cheyenne and is required for 400 Series Deluxe Two-tone paint.

I don't believe that GM ever made these with black behind the letters, only with woodgrain (at least for Chevys). I think the black background was aftermarket. What does your data indicate?

I thought the black tail gate band and black lower molding was part of the Custom Deluxe pkg. ???

Off the top of my head I would say you are right and I didn't think of that.
Custom Deluxe/Highlander would only have the upper and lower tailgate trim with painted letters. As would a 400 series painted truck or a Custom optioned with upper and lower body side moldings.
The lower body molding insert is woodgrain on Cheyenne Super, Cheyenne and most Highlanders (may be plant dependent). Custom Deluxe lower bodyside moldings have the black center as do Customs with that option.

For a Cheyenne, not a Super, I should have a wood grain band and wood grain lower trim, correct?

Does some one make a kit for wood grain lower trim? My trim is in great condition, I cannot see paying for a complete trim set with wood grain. I really don't want to use after market trim but if there is a kit to change black to wood grain, I would consider it.

Correct a Cheyenne has woodgrain lower moldings and woodgrain tailgate band (applique).

A Cheyenne Super has woodgrain lower moldings, woodgrain tailgate band (applique) and the upper belt molding.

Many Cheyennes also have optional upper belt molding and the Deluxe Two-Tone paint.

I am not going for concourse accuracy here, I just want to make it as correct as possible. I bought a very nice gate today with a band and all the trim and it looks like the ones in the photos you posted.

My truck has the optional upper trim and is two tone as well.
