no power to coil

my 86 left me stranded along the side of the road the other day, so i towed it to my grandparents house. i came over here today,to try and figure out what was wrong with it.

i checked for spark the other day when i was stck along the road, so i knew it didnt have any spark. i pulled the power wire for the coil, and touched it with a test light with the key on. no power. i should have 12v when the key is on correct?

if i should, where should i start tracing the wires? i dont really have time to chase the problem right now, so i'd like to know a decent place to start. if im not mistaken, the wire goes to the starter solenoid, am i correct there?

probably a fusable link. there are one or two on the firewall above the breack buster. or it could be your ignition switch.
(did i buthcer that spelling or what)

if it were the ignition switch, would it still crank and all of the accessories work? i forgot to mention that everything seems to be fine, except the lack of power to the coil.

yup, that wire basically goes to the BAT terminal on the starter.
