Project "Frankenstein" - 69' on the out side 05' on the inside
My last post none of the pictures worked so im trying again. Hey this is my first real post here.
Just to introduce myself. My names Ben, I'm 23, started welding when I was 16. I live out in the middle of know where and I grew up with nothing but old Chevys. Now here's the project.* I bought a 1969 C-10 SB Step Side when I was 18. I abused it a bit and now I want to give it new life by repairing the body and putting it on a new chassis. Originally I was just going to do a motor and trans but figured I would go all out. So I bought a donor truck, I picked up the 2005 silverado a few months ago and just started the project. Pics will be posted as I go 1) This is the donor truck. 2005 1/2 ton Silverado, 4.8, automatic, 90,000 miles or so, fleet vehicle. The bed would sit lower but the springs need to be moved to the inside. The problem with that is in order to move them in the tank needs to move which I'm trying to avoid if at all possible. At this point I'm thinking of using the old suspension as a solution (assuming it clears) I also prefer coil springs rather than the leafs. http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/...pscf9a71a7.jpg 5) Test fittin the 05' seats. Needs to come forward a few inches. Some Notable things at this point. The 05' core support holds the fenders the same distance apart as the '69. The cab needs the back notched about 1" on either side as sheet metal tapers in and barely hit the frame. The steering doesn't line up but I think that will be fixed by using the '05 column. The width from outside tire to outside tire is almost the exact same. The wheel base needs to shorten about 18". I'm going to use as much of the 05' wiring harness as possible. I did put a EZ wiring harness in my truck a couple years ago that will also get partially used when needed. Other than that everything is going way smoother than planned. Looks like a cool project! Have you seen the build thread "praise the lowered" he did basically the same thing but used a perfectly good late model truck, not a wrecked one. Should be nice to have the whole modern rolling chassis and drivetrain. That saves a bunch of time over rebuilding the original. Keep up the work, I'll be watching.

The steering can be made to work if you want to keep the old school look of the steering column. Check out my Young Frankenstein blog on how to do it.

So today was a lot of prep mainly stripping both cabs of their wiring hanesses, with the exception of the dash I'm using the harness from the '05. Cleaned off the firewall inside the cab and started placing the new pedal assembly (pics tomorrow). Cut off most the brackets on the frame off that were stopping the bed from sitting all the way down. Got the floor board of the '05 cut out and I'll start measuring out exact patches tomorrow. Also patching in the piece to mount the power brake, and my rear light bar patch as well.* Drug it in around 9:30 this morning and started cutting the bottom half out, actually cutting it out at the rocker panel leaving the floor plan complete because the two floors pans are almost the same width http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/...ps524ec027.jpg Took a lot more than I expected to get it out but I'm glad I did. http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/...ps1c28b6ff.jpg This is the good side... http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/...psdd642cd4.jpg Already have new rockers waiting The only thing I've noticed that I haven't given much thought is how high the body sits, right now it's spaced up by *a 2x4's but I want this thing to sit with the front about 2" lower than the rear and where the rim sits about 2" away from the fender. Unless there is another/better way to achieve this I just assumed air ride. Having the coil set up in back would just make it that much easier.* Posted via Mobile Device |

Didn't get as much as I was hoping done but I got the pedals placed, but I do need bend the brake pedal so it clears the steering column. Put the new rocker panels in, mainly to help hold the cab together when I do the floor boards.
I added the the third brake light/ cargo light as well. Patched in the panel for mounting the brake booster. Just got to clean it all up tomorrow. The killer was how bad the rust is on both kicker panels.
