454 T56 help
 

Ill try to keep this short,, 1976 454 motor 1994 T56 transmission,, now I'm being told that they won't bolt up and work together and then someone else said it work. I cut a box and drawed out the trans it looks like it will bolt up,,but the clutch hole is smaller than the crankshaft on the bbc what clutch will work?
Anyone have any part #s
What do I use to make this work?

When I had my 454ss, I wanted to do a T56 swap. I was told that it will not bolt up, but there is a guy on the www.454ss.com forum that has done it. I cannot remember what all was involved though. Try D&D maybe they can sort out your combination. Based on the fun I've had with the T56 in my 99 SS Camaro I would not put a stock trans. behind a 454 in a truck. http://www.ddperformance.com/

The T56 flywheel is a small bore & the 454 is the large bore hole where the flywheel bolts up I need to no what flywheel to use to use the other stock T56 stuff

Although, I have subscribed by posting, I have thought as well about this swap. I think it would be nice to have a well shifting many tranny bolted up to my LS6. You can get the whole kit at TREMEC I believe. I have seen quite a few TREMEC T56s bolted up to BBC like ours in show/go cars and trucks. It is a bit pricey but the best...well is...the best.

Another option is a newer 5 or 6 speed auto that can be manually or electronically shifted. I like my auto though it is a bit rudimentary at this point but I am looking forward to a new auto 6-speed I can adapt a paddle type shifter to during those times when the ricers or otherwise HP newbies want to tangle.

Yes, they are electronically modulated but there are throttle adapters for any 4150 style carb or FI unit (FAST, Edelbrock, etc).

Eventually, I'll be going to TPI at the same time when I install the 6L transmission. Okay, a bit long, but look into what TREMEC has to offer here:

I've been buying parts and stuff for my truck for 2 years and someone had told me that I would have to get a special flywheel to make it work, was looking for a part # and who to get the parts from

The early factory 350 ft lb torque limit would be a start. As I don't have any GVW or GCWR numbers I can't say how well it would work even with only 350 ft lbs input. But remember it was not factory installed in a truck and the O/D ratios are high for a truck.

The transmission has a history of production upgrades that continued long after your 94 trans. and my 99 SS Camaro were built. The late CTS, GTO and SSR transmissions had better sycros (carbon as I recall).

My car had a new 2nd sycro at 7k per GM warranty history and I'd say the trans had been out/apart at least once more after that before I bought it (third owner) at 70K.
From the noise and the fluid I began looking for a replacement or upgrade. About that time the specialist in Houston I was planning on sending it to closed down.

There is probably more info. to be found at Wikipedia on the history. The upgrades can be found in several GM bulletins if you have access but I don't have the numbers accessable tonight.

Take down your numbers, ID what you have. Call D&D for some tech help on making it work but I am pretty sure they are going to say the same thing... upgrade.

I found aflywheel at American Power Train $389 and a stage 3 or 4 clutch kit 540hp 498 lbtq from GripForce

Glad you found some parts but from what I know the trans is still the weak link, in fact far weaker than that clutch rating. You really need to talk to a trans builder about the '94 trans you have to see if it is suitable for you use without modification.

Shopping for an answer you want to hear is not in your best interest. Ask a shop that specializes in these transmissions and get an answer on how suitable your current trans is. Having something is a poor reason to install a trans that will likely be troublesome more so if you have to spend a lot to make it work. Having a truck called money pit is one thing but poor uninformed decisions make it one.
